M98 Barrel on a Mauser 22
I have had a M98 half octagon, half round barrel with an unusable bore in my junk pile for many years. Recently I decided that I need to do something with it. I came up with the idea of installing a 22lr liner and fitting it to a Mauser ES340B action.

I made a bushing for the liner drill pilot and drilled out the bore. This barely took out the rifling from the 8mm bore. The chamber was bored out and a plug made to fill the chamber and extent the shank. The plug and liner were installed with acra glass. From there it was just a matter of threading and chambering as usual.

Nice re-purpose.

Cool project. What happens at the junction of the plug and the liner? Or did you plug the chamber and bore it before installing the liner full length?

The plug has a hole for the liner and the liner goes all the way through. You can see the end on the liner extending from the plug in the top two photos.

Did the same thing 40 years ago.

Barrel was off a J. O. Sauer that some bubba reamed the 7x57 out to a 7mm Rem Mag
So bush the chamber, ream for the 22 liner and re-thread to fit the 22 Mauser action.
Made a new stock, and trigger guard.
The guard had a hinged floor plate, so when you opened the floor plate there was 5 holes for 22 Long Rifle ammo

Great project you have and its nice to save old barrels like that

Love the HP calculator too. I have one like it that is near 50 years old and still going strong.

Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

I've repurposed butchered rifles and recut the barrels to octagon, but this is a great salvage of a great existing barrel. I've got one out in the shop that I might do this very thing to!

I like the idea of the hinged floor plate and making a small ammo compartment Jim, I might do that. I have a small batch of machined from solid trigger guards I have been working on for these rifles, but I might have to make a few mini 1909's.

I finally got the pattern stock finished and had a chance to shoot it. I think it will work out okay.

GMyers,

Nice project. Well done so far.

What is the length of the barrel?

The barrel is approximately 23-1/2" long.
