Have you seen them? All their new rings have a big, and IMO, butt-ugly logo molded into the center of the top ring. They've destroyed the classic look in favor of branding.

I hope they don't pimp out their scopes as well. I choose Leupold largely on the fact the scopes don't look like they belong in a SciFi movie.

Leupold continues to spiral down.

I just today ordered a dual dovetail setup for a specific deal where my usual Talleys wouldn't work. Hopefully they won't have that birthmark on the top. Frowner

I phoned Leupold to ask their tech support if they might be planning to part number rings without the logo. Tech said no, and he seemed to agree with my opinion that the logo was not a good thing. He suggested I email someone named Tim Lesser to express my dissatisfaction with their new product. Tech also told me the old top rings won't fit on the new ring bottom parts. I sent an email to timlesser@leupold.com, and then called Brownells to express my opinion. One of their techs went into the warehouse and cherry-picked remaining stock without said logo for me. If any of you care you might consider taking similar action. I just can't put those rings on any of my rifles.

I only used Leupold scopes, but I have always thought the gold ring was a huge mistake. A "marketing before aesthetics" faux pas.

Their rings have always been as "classic" in my mind as the Rem 700. YMMV....

Maybe they will replace the logo on the rings with a "gold ring". Now that would be sweet!

What's the big deal? I have 4-5 pair of used "old style" ones - mostly gloss medium I'll sell if you are interested. They may or may not be Leupold mfg.

That's why:

I bought all the 26mm Leupold rings when they dropped them. (very nice)

I use S&K mounts whenever possible. Stronger one piece rings, sleek and windage adjustment in both bases. Second choice would be Conetrol.

At least the new Loopies are no worse looking than the Talleys. (which are very well made, just not handsome)

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

At least it's not gaudy. They could be worse.

Although I do prefer Talley to all other rings. Leupold are my distant second choice

Of all the things to get worked up about, this ain't one of 'em! You might start by considering the fool in the White House and his crooked AG, both of whom want to prevent you from owning a firearm on which you can mount those rings. flame

I would really like to see an example of your work here, Redoak.

As for the Leupold on topic, it really doesn't bother me but I would prefer not to have the logo.

Since they are holding down a Swarovski scope I really did not want that logo on the rings.

FWIW, for those that might use the Leupold ring wrench, it does not fit the new 'branded' rings.

Is there a new wrench available? WTF?

I guess I will go to a 1-inch dowel if I run into this. But seriously considering not having that problem if you get my drift.

The logo doesn't bother me nearly as much as this news.

Snellstorm,

I'll have to dig out my notes and check, I weighed everything when I put it together.

I was trying to get my LR M98 7 x 57 below 5.5 # (just to see if I could do it), but I am an 1.5 ounces above that.

Plenty of other fish in the sea that (the rings of which) look just like Leupold standard single screw rings. At least they incused the logo unlike what SAVAGE stooped to by putting that sticker on the bolt of their bolt-action rifles. CB

I have both matte versions in hand. The newer ones with the logo are a tad bit slimmer. I have tried and the parts are compatible with each other, the top halves and bottom halves interchange.

The newer ones with the logo are actually a nicer match (color and texture) finish wise with the Leupold matte bases. The logo isn't obtrusive or gaudy and I actually chose them to go on my newest mauser project.
