I'd like to build a 6.5/284. I presently have 2 rifles that I can use to build it.

One is a Savage 12FLV that presently has a .308win barrel on it which is shooting wonderfully. Groups in the .16" range. I'm not certain I want to mess with it right now.....

The Second is a Remington 700LH in 270win. I've had this rifle for many years now and have run about 3000 rnds thru it. It still shoots groups in the 1/2" range.

I could do the work myself if I use the Savage, and it is a short action, however I've heard that some of the very long 6.5's may not chamber in the short action? I'm not at all unhappy with the idea with a single shot (Remington 700LH)--(follower) long action.....

In case you haven't figured it out, I'm left-handed.... Finding left handed actions is sometimes a problem....
I would also like the 700's action squared up (blue-printed) while I'm at it, If that's the way to go.

Any thoughts on this build would be appreciated....
Thanks, Mike

My only thought is that people spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars and sometimes even more than hundreds of dollars seeking the accuracy that you report in the two rifles that you already own. Why in the world would you want to tear them down. Spend a few bucks and buy yourself another action.

I built my 6.5x284 on a left handed Montana Rifle Co. short action but the MRC short action will take a 3.2" cartridge length so the 142 grain SMK's work fine in mine.

If I have guns shooting under a 1/2", I wouldn't touch them either.

I really don't want to mess with the Savage, however, I'm told that changing barrels out in the Savage is very easy and returning it to the original only take's about 20 mins and that returning to that accuracy isn't a problem. Barrels are anywhere from $150 to God only knows. Usually about $250, not much for another gun, and one more is never enough. You should know that...... 22WRF

On the other hand The Remington isn't in that good of shape. There is some spalding on the lugs, (I've loaded some rounds a little hot, over the years) that's why I'd like it to be squared up and worked on. And although I'm able to get 1/2" groups I'm loading a long way out into the throat to get those groups. It's taken it's share of big game, about 40 head of Mule deer and a number of elk. However, It's time for a change I think...

What I really need to know, Will the 270 ( long action ) work, and work well, or do I need to find a left-handed short action??????

If you're determined to change the .270, I think that it would not only be a good choice but better than a short action considering that it is a good idea to seat those 142 gr bullets out so that you can use that case to full advantage. Have the action blueprinted and go for it. I built one for a friend that is shooting well into the low .3's.

Masterifleman, why did you say, "determined".

All in all counting the cost of an experienced local gunsmith do you think that this will set me back, and to open another can of worms, what barrel in the straight taper or heavy varmint weight, say around 26-27" would you suggest, Douglas, Shilen, 3 groove, 5,7 etc., tight neck?
