Using safe reloads in a modern (721-700) are not these two virtually equal with 165gn and over? I'd use a 26" barrel. capt david troll

The 300 WM holds more powder. It just has to have an edge even with lighter bullets.

I like the 300 H&H because I have one and you don't. Otherwise the 300 WM is a slightly better design. Not much better, but better.

The differences are minimal and the real differences are not in performance of the bullet....it's in bolt throw length.

With heavy bullets the 300 Win Mag will not hold more powder as one has to seat the bullets too deep and that takes up powder space..They run about neck and neck with the 300 Win taking a slight advantage with 150 to 165 gr. bullets, about even with 180s but the 300 H&H walks away from them all except the 300 WBy, with 200 and 220 gr. bullets....

I have shot both for years, but my son took my 300 Win Mag a couple of years back, and I have been using my old 300 H&H ever since..I always liked it better anyway..

Ray,

I know wildcats don't really float your boat but your reasoning on the 300 Win mag are exactly why I like my 30-338's better than any any 300 Win Mag.

I am not a follower of maxiumum velocity loads, so my loads are 2950-3000 FPS with a 200 gr. Nosler. I could push and load hotter I suppose but a few extra feet per second isn't worth the loss of accuracy. The 300 Weatherby can better my velocities by about 75 fps, and that is only after some of the newer slow burning powders
became available.

The 30-338 uses H4831, IMR 4831, MRP, Reloader 19, or IMR 4350 all can meet or beat 3000 fps with 200 grain bullets, and the cartridge isn't fussy like the 300 WIn Mag.

I will confess after a lot of load work, multiple rifles, my opinion of 300 Mags is very low. I had better success with lighter bullets in the 300 WIn Mag but I found it very picky on powder lots, batches of bullets, even primer types. I know you and Allen Day both have better luck with these than I have, but I look at a 300 Win Mag anymore I look at a rebarreling project only or I am not interested.

The 300 H&H is a whole different story, I have no negative comments at all and the only reason I don't own one currently is the one I had I sold years ago, and just haven't ever run across another in something I would want to own. No its not on the top of my to buy list as I have a lot of 30 cal rifles but it permanently sits on my watch list. Great cartridge Big Grin

If building on the same action, of those three the 300 WM will hold the most powder and will provide the most velocity--yes, even with the heavy bullets. But there really isn't a whole lot of difference between them ballistically.

If you're looking for more power, step up to the Wby or 30-8mm Rem Mag/STW or Dakota. You'll get more satisfaction with those than dwelling on the tiny differences between the first three.

If you want more than that, you can always stuff a RUM into that same length action. That's what I did by rechambering my WM to RUM because that's what I wanted. It's fun. Wink

If you aren't looking for more power, pick whichever of the first three you "like" the best for whatever other reason. They're all similar ballistically.

The bolt throw issue depends on a lot of things. IE: action type customization etc. Comparing factory model 70's, there is indeed a difference in the bolt throw.

One thing for sure...that looong sloping cartridge case will "kennel up" with ease and quickly in the chamber of the 300 H&H. When your panties are in a wad and you to have really hurry, hurry you might come to appreciate that feature. Not saying the belted 300 WM will not do so but it does have the sharper shoulder and a belt to fuss with.
Both along with the 300 Wby. will take on anything that is mostly mean and ugly.

You can borrow money but you can not borrow time. Go hunting with your family.
