Some (most?) of you may be familiar with the .500 Jeffery that is being raffled off on the African Hunting board. I was wondering how to go about obtaining a similar looking finish on a stock I'll be working on soon. What sort of stain or oils should I look for? I'll be using a piece of semi-fancy American walnut if that matters.

does this finish trip your trigger?

That's a fine looking finish, but I'm interesting in something a little more reddish. I am assuming that is mainly a function of how it was finished, although I'm sure the color of the wood he started with has something to do with it as well.

Not sure, but this might be due to what is called 'red root oil', as present it the classic english stock finish. I have a CCL traditional gunstock finishing kit, and the oil component is a very dark-red oil, more specifically alkanet or red root oil, apparently being made by putting the alkanet root in linseed oil. never tried making the stuff myself, though...

martinibelgian is correct, and the other name is "alkanet root" stain Brownells sells (or used to) this this dye (and it is a dye, not a pigment stain so it wont obscure any figure like a pigment stain will). I've used stains to get a nice reddish colour on some stocks with extremely plain grain, and they came out very well. jpb
