30 06- 300 win mag

I saw somewhere else on the site where someone had got a 30 06 reamed out to 300 win mag.
The Lee manual gives the same mag length for both cases but different head dimensions.
How difficult is it to convert a 06 to a 300 win mag? Apart from the chamber reaming, how do the bolt face and twist rate compare?
good shooting

The bolt face will need to be opened and the extractor changed and you may need to alter the feed rails so the larger case can feed up from the magazine. What action are you wanting to do this with?

Twist rates are the same.

Thanks for the feedback guys,
I"m in the UK, and there"s lots of old 30 06"s to be had in CZ"s/BRNO"s and Mauser actions(Parker Hale, Midland, Gibbs etc) for very little money as people have more money to spend now and they all seem to want a fancy new stainless synthetic.
I"m toying with the idea of getting a win mag,
but it would only be for occasional use. I"m, going to Canada next year, and maybe for pigs at some stage. I thought re-chambering one of those old CZ"s or Parker Hales might be a cheap route for a "working rifle" rather than buying new, and i don"t need a win mag for use in the UK.

You're correct when you say the OAL is the same for both cartridges but, if you can come by a CZ in a longer magazine length, you'll be ahead of the curve. The .300 WINMAG begs for a full length magnum magazine box so you don't have to stuff a 180 gr. bullet down past the body/shoulder junction of the case. They may have been made to function in an '06 length action but for another 3/8" of bolt stroke it would have been better for a longer neck and less intrusion of the bullet in the case (IMHO).

Masterifleman,
Why CZ in particular, do you know if they made one with a longer mag length? I agree it would be worth a little extra length if it was available. At the moment it"s just an idea, i have"nt been looking for rifles yet. If i thought the one would be better than another because of bolt face or mag length, then i"d know what to look for.

I wasn't thinking necessarily of a CZ except I like them. If they are as available as you say in the UK, I would look for a CZ with a longer box but, it would probably have to be in a magnum caliber. A model 70 WIN or a Remington 700 would work because the long actions are the same length, magnum or otherwise. All you would need to do is make sure you could get a the proper mag box or remove the filler plate. I converted a Mod 70 from .300 WINMAG to .404 Jeffrey and only had to pull the filler plate out of the box to make it work (plus a lot of work on the feed rails) for the 404.
