I'm working on my first winchester 70. I bought a boyds thumbhole varminter stock real cheep and then went out and bought a gun to fit it. kind of backwards I know. I got a 243 win SA with a semi heavy barrel and laminated stock nice looking setup but I still wanted the thumb hole stock. I had to open up the area for the recoil lug and open up the barrel chanel. every thing there looks good, but my trigger gaurd is too shinny .700 and the cut out in the stock is .780. Is there a differant model rifle that was ment for this rifle? I don't see much about the with of trigger gaurds and floor plates in the after market books. any help would be great Jeremy

assuming you meant skinny. I had a lot of space around the only Boyds I ever had. If it is walnut try and glue in a piece and re-inlet if it is laminate I would just fill with dark epoxy. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

All post-64's were nominally .700", with the pre-64's being .600".....They widened them up due to them using aluminum rather than steel to increase strength.....didn't work all that well. I reckon a guy should count his blessings that what you've described is the only problem with your Boyd stock. I've had a couple I sent back and 2 more that aren't usable......I gave up on them a long time ago. Williams Machine Works

belive me that wasn't the only problem, I'vr got 10 hours in sanding out the tool marks and inletting the reciever. I thought a few hours and I would be ready to finish it. I'd been beter off getting one that wasn't inleted at all and did it myself. I was just messing with it and noticed the follower in the mag well stopped short of being all the way up in the reciever when assembled and the front screw isn't long enough. Heres my plan hopefully I can take enough wood off the bottom to make it less noticeable I'll post pics when I get it done

Matt I just took a tour of your site, nice looking stuff. If one of those trigger gaurds would just drop in. I thought of making something that would fit the inletting seems like alot of work with what I have for tools thoe. I might take a piece of aluminum and mill out a spot for the trigger gaurd to set in. probably sand it flush with the stock. jeremy

you ended up with one of their older stocks... the newer CNC produced ones are much better... I have a thumbhole on a short action that you speak of.. I had to do a lot of surgery to get it working right and set up... I have done a lot of Boyd's stocks.. that is why I know you have an older one.. probably why you got it so cheap... they are good stocks.. especially the CNC designed ones..
