Could anyone tell me the correct way to pin a recoil lug (such as a Holland) on a Remingon 700? Thanks

What tools do you have at your disposal? Do you have the lug already? Does it already have the pin hole drilled in it? Have you thought about using the tooling that is available for doing just this operation?

Hollands makes a fixture just for doing pinned recoil lugs. Brownells part # 403-000-001.

Otherwise, you'll need to make up a threaded stub that will fit into the barrel threads to locate and clamp the lug in place, yet the clamping shoulder will not block the pre-drilled hole in the lug.

Measure the hole in the lug, hopefully it is just under a common pin size.

Use the stub to clamp the lug in place, verify that the bottom of the lug is parallel with the bottom of the receiver.

Use an undersize, but tight fitting drill to drill into the reciever, then ream both receiver and lug to .0005 over final pin size.

You can do all the work in your drill press, assuming that the quill of the drill is normal (perpendicular in all axis) to the drill table, and that you have a means to hold the receiver in place. A receiver wrench would probably do the trick, as would a 1.355 (or whatever size your receivers OD measures) hole bored into a collar that clamps onto the OD of the receiver.

FYI, I bought several Taylor brand recoil lugs from Midway recently. .200" thick, double disc ground, pre-drilled for the pin, and were about 5-6 bucks less than Holland or Tubb. Oh, and these were in stainless as well.

Regards,
Scott

Crow,
Sometimes you can get a discontinued part if they still have one or two remaining on the shelf. I got one of their last two lefthand recoil reducers that was listed as discontinued, but was shown on the order-taker's screen as being available until existing stocks were depleted. The gent needing that lug thing should give it a try; he might get lucky.

To hold the lug against the receiver, I used a short barrel stub and milled a flat in the correct place. To align the lug I've made a number of alignment tools for Rem, Holland, and my own thick lugs. You could probably eye-ball the lug location if you put a pc. of 1/4-28 all-thread of a long screw into the front action screwhole. It doesn't have to be perfect, does not have to mate to other parts, etc.
