That "switch" is the magazine cut off.

It should be kept in the up position if you wish to feed the rounds in the magazine. The bolt should stay in the rifle unless it is set midway between off and on. Maybe yours has been modified???

OH MY!! DeBee, thank you for enlightening me on the "magazine cutoff" and splainin how it works! Nope no modifications, just a stupid silly oversight on my part. Put the switch in the "on" position and it feeds all rounds flawlessly! I have half a mind to delete my first post on this subject-pretty embarrasing...

thanks again

Dave

I have in my possesion a springfield 03 that I droped into a sile stock that I re-finished and took it out to the range yesterday and it shot really well-good groups with a williams peep site but at 100 yards it shoots low and to far left...but anyway my problem is that the gun will not feed rounds 2-5 out of the magazine-the bolt does not come back far enough to catch the round...it lacks about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of catching the round, so in a sense it is a single shot. to get rounds 2-5 out of the magazine I have to adjust the switch on the side that allows the bolt to come completely out. Is this something I can fix, or do I need to have a gunsmith take a look?

Thanks

Dave

Don't feel bad at all. You aren't the first who has done that. I can tell you lots bigger horror stories than yours.

I have run into several people who thought the cutoff was the safety lever. Imagine that for a bit. In fact, I know one fellow who carried his rifle on his shoulder with the bolt open and the "Safety" lever in the middle position because that is how he carried his model 70. When he got back to the rig he found the bolt to his rifle missing.

Now that would be embarrasing.

Dave,

I hope I didn't insult your intelligence... It's just so rare for me to be able to answer a question on this board instead of ask one... Had to go for it.

DeBee, oh my not at all. I appreciate the info-saved me from being red-faced in person...I was gonna take it to a gun smith this next week! So you might have even saved me some cash---don't trust the local smith's much around here as it is.

Thanks again

Dave
