Hello from Scotland~ I have a .308 M-bolt stainless 22" barrel. I am thinking of having a "reflex" sound moderator fitted ,it slides over the barrel rather than screwing on the end, so it only adds about 3" to the over all length. I wondering can i shorten my barrel to say, 20" 18" to help balence things up ? What effects would the barrel reduction have other than velocity ?? Any advice welcome.......... Englander

Englander, I have two .308s with shorter barrels, 19" and 20". For field use I do not notice any difference, but of course there is some velocity loss. Here is some velocity data for the 19" barrel of the Steyr Scout rifle from John Schafer's web site: http://www.steyrscout.org/steyrdb.htm#Velocity%20Tests I would life to use a moderator too, unfortunately it is a giant pain to do so (legally) in the USA. jim dodd.

Englander, I don't think there is any real significant loss if you cut it back to 20". That is what I would probably do, that leaves you with a net gain of only an inch. JMHO Barry
