I'd like to chamber a Highwall in one of these cartridges. I can find nice 7mm barrels, but no one rents a reamer that I've found. I don't want to pay $175 and wait 5 months to buy one. I've tried 4D and Elk Ridge. Has anyone seen them at another site? Quick, Cheap, or Good: Pick Two

4D lists the 7x65R, but not the 7x57R. http://www.4-dproducts.com/dis...wid=137&tname=rental Why don't you call them and ask?

I used to rent reamers but no longer do so; I buy them from PTG and usually keep them, but you can sell them for about the same price as you paid for them, minus a rental fee and postage and insurance both ways. As for the 7x57R, you can get a standard 7x57 for that one for less than $100. Bore the rim recess if you need one. Have you looked at a standard 280 Rem for the long one? Use standard 280 dies; I think it will work.

The 7x64 has the same chamber dimensions as the 7x65r save for the rim. See the Norma ammo website - it has all the chamber dimensions. http://www.norma.cc/en/Products/Hunting/7x64/ The 280 Remington whilst very similar ballisticly is quite a different shape and not interchangeable. In the real world probably not a lot to choose between the 7x57r and 7x65r - the latter only really gains an advantage on the 173gn bullets. If you are shooting 140gn bullets and ou are in a strong action like a single shot, the 7x57r would be more than adequate for anything you shoot a 7mm with.

No, the 280 is not interchangeable with the 7x65r; I mean actually chamber it for the 280 and use 7x65 brass; it will be a 280 rimmed. Just a simpler way to do it, logistically.

Actually, looking again at 4D, they have both 7X65R and 7X57 Rimmed. Unfortunately both have solid pilots. I only have one experience with 4D, that for a 219 Donaldson Wasp. The solid pilot was too large for the .218 bore of my rifle and the gunsmith, who is an admitted fussbudget about tooling, didn't like the way the reamer had been resharpened. But then his barrels shoot very tiny groups. As for boring a rim recess without a chamber and bore-riding pilot, I wouldn't even utter those words in his shop. He might have to do some sort of cleansing ritual to dispel the bad Karma! I have about 200 new Norma 7X57R cases that just need to be used. I'll concentrate on that caliber, as I already have a custom High wall in .30-40 Krag. Quick, Cheap, or Good: Pick Two

If he is that good a machinist, he will know how to bore a rim recess; it will as good as the chambering set up and is all clearance anyway, except for depth. You should buy the reamer and that way can specify your dimensions.
