I have a 7x57 and a 30-06 FN commercial Mauser. They both have original barrels and replacement stocks. They both shoot around an inch at 100yds. I would like to put barrel mounted sling swivels on both. I like the looks as much as anything. I have never used the sling when shooting. My gunsmith, who's opinion I respest, says that anything I hang from the barrel will affect accuracy, but he's an accuracy nut because he shoots P/dogs. What have been you experience's. capt david Big Grin

The barrel band swivel isn't necessary for the low recoiling rifles but you just like the looks and want one.....then get one. It's extremely unlikely that you will suffer any loss of accuracy to your hunting rifle. I'd not install one on a long distance target gun but for your intentions.....go for it!!

On anything below .375 H&H, both sling bases need to be mounted on the stock.

I'm working on 2 Mausers with the Schnable?? forends. 6.5x55 and 7x57 There just aint room on the forend for a swvel stud and my left hand. I've been wondering the same thing about accuracy. I've got Pac Nor barrels going on them and I'd hate to have them not shoot as well as they could.

There is no hard fast rule as what caliber gets a barrel band and what doesn't. Maybe there are calibers that need one, but you can put one on anything. If you want one, go for it.
This one is a .300 H&H model 70 and shots .5's all day with the sling attached.

"Need" to be mounted on the stock? Why?

I think what Mr Day means here is "in order to find residency in HIS gun cabinet."

If you want barrel bands get them....I love there looks to and there is no calibre rule in regards to having a barrel band or not, it's just peoples tastes and opinions.

I think they should be on all hunting rifles as there pleasing to MY eye Wink

Barrel mounted slingswivels (band or just a soldered pedestal) are very common in Central Europe - also for lighter calibers. It probably has more to do with how rifles are carried than anyting else. The barrel mounted sling allows the rifle to carry "deeper" when on the shoulder. In Central Europe, traditionally rifles are carried under the left (or at least non-trigger) arm, with the barrel pointing upwards and forward. A sling mounted futher forward aids in this mode of carry.

If you use a sling as a shooting aid, you'll find that a barrel-mount front swivel base will tend to have a serious impact on point-of-impact downrange. You can HANG a sling that way and have zero POI change, but get into a tight sling and this tends to change quite dramatically, moreso with some rifles than others.

On heavy kickers, the barrel-mounted front base serves a real function, and with such rifles the sling is seldom used as a shooting aid anyway, and in fact for dangerous game use the sling is often, at the insistance of the professional hunter, left off the rifle altogether.

On lighter calibers the barrel-mounted base is an exercise in cosmetic gratification more than it is anything else that serves no functional purpose, but it can have a negative effect on functional accuracy.

Wiht me, form follows function every time.

Listen, if you've got some kind of comment to direct at me, why don't you just state it right to my face like a man instead of trying to get at me by directing your remarks through somebody else........

Just redirecting remarks that were made to some of my replies. If you don't like it maybe you should tone your own posts down a little.

I like a barrel band swivel on almost anything, as I'm 5'9" and the barrel isn't sticking up over my head catching on all the brush I'm ducking under. It just makes it a lot handier, particularly with a 24 in. barrel. I don't hold my left hand far enough out on the forend to hit a stock mounted swivel on even a big bore, so that isn't a concern of mine. In rough country I like the way it drops the rifle down on the shoulder 5-6 inches.
