should be about 27 ft-lbs and 20 fps of recoil velocity.....estimating that you'll need about 65 grains behind that 140 grainer

I made a .243 for aguy a little while back that finished up at 5# 2oz with scope (a 2.5-8 Leupold) and sling installed. With the 2.5 Leupold you mention it would have been condiserdably lighter. I did not get it 1000% finished, so he is sending it back after this season so I can lighten it some more. It needs to be no more than 5# even with sling installed. It is not that hard to do if you take the time to do it. It can be chambered for any short cartridge at this weight-even the 325 WSM!!! But even I would say that would be too much of a good thing.

are you sure that recoil figure is correct?
we are talking about the 6.5x54 Mannlicher Shoen. which takes around 40gn of powder,not anywhere near 65gns!

I ran the numbers on "load by a disk" and here's what I came up with.

140gn SPBT bullet
RL-19 38.5gn = 2480FPS
4.5lb firearm = 15.9 recoil velocity, 17.7 recoil energy

recoil described as "vigorus"

I'd have a had time holding a rifle that light steady.

thanks for the math.seems acceptable. I could bring the rig up a little to 5 or 5.25lb allup,first by longer/heavier barrel,then larger scope,followed by less action mods(in that order of priority). The initial exercise was to see how light we could actually achieve,then one can balance it out fron there. I would be quite happy with arig up to 6.0-6.25lb but I would still like to give a rig in the 4.5- 5.25lb range ago! However 5.0 to 5.25lb sound like a good figure and it would give me the slightly heavier/longer barrel(23" .530" muzzle dia.) and higher power scope(2-7x ultralight) I would prefer.

Do you have all the parts already? Last I spoke with PGW they told me they were "primarily a military contractor" now and no longer doing sporting rifles. Those M15 actions are NICE though!

No, I dont have the parts. I have not been in touch with them for awhile.I heard that they have alot of Military work on their plate. Dont know how it has effected their other work.

oops! my mistake! thought you had something like the .260 Rem in mind, a friend of mine here has a beautiful M1903 Mannlicher-Schoenauer take-down rifle in 6.5x54MS, he got the lil thing for a steal, cos the previous owner thought the caliber was obsolote!!
