High quality work all the way around. I especially like the treatment on the rear island and sights. ______________________________ "Truth is the daughter of time." Francis Bacon

That shell-type design on the sights and grip are very nice. Looks like the leaves for the sights have some stippling?? I bet it takes away the glare and looks great too.

Yes, sight leaves and top of rib are stippled. I don’t have too many regrets about this project. It would have been nice to have it built on a Mauser but there aren’t too many options for the “sinisterâ€. As it is I had to strip one of those “G†prefix Winchesters for its action. Small correction. I believe the bolt knob was actually checkered/engraved by the metalsmith, Bob de Vries. Here are the only work-in-progress pictures I have of the rifle being built. I managed one trip to Melbourne during that time. The metal work was very much in draft form but I could see it had promise. The scariest part of the project was being told the metal work was ready to be sent for engraving. The stockmaker, whose work and sense of style I both greatly admired and trusted gave me the recommendation. But I’d seen no pictures or samples of Vinnicombe’s engraving beforehand. No web pages or email for quick communication. The engraving commission was organized by post and telephone. I spoke with him a few times and sent him some rough sketches of mine and some photos indicating some basic design ideas. That was all. Then it was sit back and wait. To say I was more than pleased with the results is an understatement. And except for the rosette in the center of the floorplate, he took no notice of my design ideas! I thought he was only doing the lettering, stippling, some border work with a few small corner scrolls, plus the floorplate rosette. He covered much more metal than I had envisaged. The other thing to note is this work was completed after the man had retrained himself after suffering health issues (stroke) a couple of years previous to taking on this job. I’m told his earlier work was even better. Cheers, - stu

Stu, That rifle is just breathtaking. That's the kind of work that you stare at for hours and marvel at what some craftsmen can do.

Very nice and I love the bolt knob engaving Mike Legistine actu? Quid scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Thanks for all the nice comments from everyone. I really enjoy seeing other people’s rifle pictures posted on this site and have been meaning to take some of my own for a long time. Finally worked out a few issues and got to it over the weekend. Doug H – with a young family I don’t get to do nearly as much hunting as I would like to. This rifle was taken on a cull hunt in Nth Queensland just after I picked it up and I shot a few feral cattle and horses with it. It’s also been carried in the field a few other times without any further kills being put next to its name. Steve – I wish I had a studio to work in but the only suitable place to take photos in my apartment is on my balcony, which is only about 4 ½ feet wide. I have a small Sony pocket digital camera and a mini table tripod. I just hung a sheet against the back wall, set-up the camera on the tripod and used the self-timer function. The camera did the rest. I’m pretty happy with the photo results but I still need to work on lighting and shadows. It’s also amazing the lint that shows up on the metalwork once the photos are enlarged. Thanks again. - stu
