this is a hobbyist model 9x20 belt drive lathe I am looking at. Any thoughts on how durable and the quality of it? I know it's not a Sheldon #25, but it is about $1500 with the stand and for a hobbyist...?

The spndle bore is kinda small isn't it?

Look at the grizzly 10 X 22:

I don't have experience with either of these but I think the numbers are better on this one, FWIW.

don't price, but Grizzly had a gunsmith lathe and mill at Shot Show, talked to the guy operaing the lathe said helped design the late for gun work. The operator is the owner of Gordy's GunSmithing in Pella Iowa.

What are you going to do with it? It's too small for any serious between center barrel work. You will want a minimum of 1.375 spindle bore. The first new lathe I ever bought was in 1980. It was a JET 12X36 Belt Drive. In 1994 I sold it to one of my students and bought my current JET 13X40 Gear Head. I talked to that kid a couple of weeks ago and he is still using that lathe. It is very durable and very accurate for it's size.

I'm with Westpac here; the Jet 13x40 is a good gunsmithing lathe. The one you're looking at is too small for most things gunsmiths do.

Just for the hell of it, I googled "jet 13x40 lathe" and lo and behold, one of our AR posters had one for sale at what seems like a damn good price on 2/3/08.....Marc Stokeld.....don't know if he still has it or not, but you might check with him.....

I will second the Jet 13 inch Lathes.

I bought a 13 x 40 belt drive new in 1985, it got used hard every day in our machine shop I sold it about 1999. At that time it had about .001" wear on the ways up close to the spindle.

In 1987 I bought a 13 x 36 belt drive and set a turret bed on it. I still have it and it just keeps chugging along. It gets used more as a regular lathe now that the turet.

The only problem you will have on these is the power switch lever system. IF the box screws are not lined up right it puts the switch at a angle and you will go thru switches about once a year. Relieve the holes to let it find its center and no problem.

Also the gear cover is in the way for the 5C collet closer but that can be cut out to clear, so you can open the cover to put it in back gears.

I have been wanting a 13 x 40 gear head lathe for a couple of years, but simply no SPACE in the shop to put one.

last barrel I chambered had .0007" TIR. THis barrel had all kinds of stuff soldered on it and is being stocked full contact wood to metal. That precision is overkill for the application.

I have cut them with less TIR, but that was the last one.

What a damn shame. Here I have been looking for a lathe for quite some time, would have bought this one in an instant as soon as I saw this, and I would have only had to haul it about 25 miles down the road from Cloquet, but after being bashed on here for no good reason I wouldn't buy a damn thing from Stokeld.

Who would you have sent to buy it?

Idahosharpshooter,
I agree with the comments on the size of the lathe. It may do some things for you but the larger on would be well worth the extra cost. I had a 13X40 belt drive like Mark's and Jim's and Roger Kehr, aka scrollcutter, has it now. He talked me out of it and I do miss it but he is putting it to much better use.

BTW, kev, blue or 22huya (huya=head up your ass), you have never had a bashing on here that was not WELL deserved.

22Kolostomy,
Tell me exactly what you had to offer to the discussion about this lathe? Did you post to give some advice or just to say someone had hurt your feelings? If you have some knowledge to add then come out with it. Well we are all deeply concerned about you. In a pig's ass. (Now come back with your playground -same to you fella answer).

Or is that Pinnochio nose.

What business is it of yours? I don't see moderator after your name.

What I had to offer to the discussion is that I have been looking for a lathe for a long time and this one that is for sale happens to be only 25 miles from where I want to put it. Its a shame that the seller had to be such an asshole or I would have purchased it from him.

Okay, go back outside and play.
