Remington 700 Short Action Stock differences ?

One of my ongoing projects is updating 721 and 722 Remingtons with top condition bores but crappy wood.

Let's focus on 722s as I have just acquired a 722A in 222 with excellent metal in and out but a beat stock. In the past I have always used various 700 308 family short action stocks that require little work to fit a 722 into them.

Now I have run across some interesting Remington factory camo synthetic stocks that state they are for short action Ultra mags (7 & 300 SAUM). Insofar as I can tell the only differences between these stocks and those for the 308 family is a wider magazine box. If that is true, shimming the sides of the 222 box should make it work in these stocks.

A recent example: Ex. 722 222 Benchrest rifle with Shilen barrel and new laminated Remington "regular" short action stock.

Am I missing something ?

As an aside, I have a DPMS AR lower that happily accepts 308, 243, 338F & 300 SAUM uppers. Only the SAUM magazine is different on its inside.

Thanks for your help.

Why would you need to shim the sides of the mag box?

Because the 222 mag box might be narrower than a SAUM box. But I don't know that for sure. Check your 222 mag box and see if there aren't spacers inside the box to handle the small cartridges, and the outside of all the boxes are the same. maybe.
You aren't missing anything. Go for it.

Thanks. It's a std 222 Rem and has a std 722 box
(for all 722 chamberings but it has the filler at the rear for the shorter cartridge).

I was just guessing that since the S/A magnum stocks have a different part # than their S/A 308 family stocks. All I could imagine is that since the SAUMs were based the 404 Jeffery, the magazine would have to be wider as the fat case would probably not stagger well in a standard magazine.

Filling the magazine hole a bit to take the narrower magazine is no big deal. Since the 722 magazines "lock" into the receiver bottom and have up presure from the floorplate, it would probably work with no modifications except the usual bolt handle, safety and barrel rear sight "lump" inletting.

Let you know how it works.

Thanks again !

The main difference between the standard mag box and the SAUM mag box is the "windows" in the sides. I don't want the mag box touching anything but the bottom of the mag well, in the action.

IME in 721/2s the top of the magazine lock into cuts in the front and rear of the action's bottom and the steel floorplate holds it there by pressing up on it. That is why the middle (skinny) floorplate to action screw in these actions should never be more than just "stay in tight" (I use blue locktite).
I have converted 721/2s to 700 wood using 700 bottom medal (BDL) that has no middle screw. The 721/2 magazine box has to have a fair amount taken off the bottom with a belt sander for this to work.

722 222 that had no bottom metal and was fitted with 700 222 mag, spacer, follower, spring, screws and bottom metal.

The Barrel channel inlet is the only difference between a 700 mountain, sporter, magnum & 40X stock.

Action & mag box inlet,ADL or BDL are the same.

Post 2006/X Mark triggered action inlets differ from pre 2006/std triggered action inlets.

A Jewell trigger group requires stock clearance & bottom metal clearance.
