This is a GAG stock (great american) that I never started. I bought it over 20 years ago. When did GAG close down?

Chilean is now a 7mmMau. Wedding bands turned on the barrel by a fellow AR member and dpcd did the rest (barrel, safety, D&T , handle)

The 7" (right of blue tape) is about golden rule and behind the ringlets.

I like that style stock and of course, the caliber and action!

from the photo the stock looks to have considerable drop at the heel?

I've used a half dozen or so of them over the years. They went up in smoke (burnt down) in 2007. AFAIK, they never rebuilt/came back.

the olde oberndorf classic / gary gaudy stock. It can be executed well, but as Henry and I have spoken, over a couple decades, all of his stocks are WAY too thic ... first thing to do with a gag stock is to get out a hoof rasp and find out what the stock looks like under all that extra - midway used to carry the "Same" stock, but it had already been whittled down a good deal.

enjoy the process, there's a lot of wood to be removed to get the stalking rifle feel that this stock LOOKS like it should have

I also used many of their stocks; yes they have a lot of drop at the heel; classic European style for iron sights, but they work well enough for a scope. and yes, they left a lot of wood due to the pantagraph tolerance, but it was easily removed. Not for modern shooters who think all stocks have to be dead straight target style combs.
They also had straight patterns; that Oberndorf pattern is just one of what they had.
GAG was open for a few years after the fire, selling off old inventory.

I didn't realize how "off" this stock is.

The depth of the action and the tg/box is such that the action is bottoming out. I'm gonna take about 3/16 off the box. Hope the screws will be OK. May cut the TG loop off and replace with the shotgun loop. and weld up the lock screw holes.

Should make the whole thing more svelte :-)

yes, do check the internal mag to action fitment -- if you forced an action into an untrimmed gag stock, it would be over 3/8" gap..

Did you ever seen Duane's wood beaver in action?

there was a give away rifle, some years ago, that Duane made the stock for - he (or his minions more likely) posted a video of a carbide behemoth of a cutter on a, looked like 1.5 hp 3ph motor - spinning and grinning like death offering a drink and a toke first, and he was whittling the blank from this death machine -- looked like it would grab your overalls and wad them up, with you in them -- and there's Duane, acting like it was a scotch bright on a 1/4 hp polisher

i must have mis-read the bottoming out part -- thinking that the stock was too tall .. from your read, sounds like it was too short ..

It's a gag stock, with low grade wood, just put it next to the firepit till next winter
