Looking at a ProHunter in .376, although I greatly prefer the stock design of the Scout rifle.

Does anybody have any experience with swapping the stocks around? And if so...what about the magazines?

Are all the Prohunters/Scouts built on the same length action? CDNN has the Scout stocks priced fairly reasonably in two different finishes.

Thanks!

Bryan

Not so bad in a ProHunter. Mine was stout but not painful. Sold it to another poster so I could build another 376 in a more classic platform. Love the round though and can't being without at least one.

Actually, I was planning on using the 225's on some groundhogs tomorrow

Thanks for all the input, I'll load up some 300 grainers with Varget to see how this thing recoils with REAL loads.

Most of the "thin" 375 barrels really aren't. Probably close to a Shillen 3-1/2. I have a turned piece of really pretty black walnut in a low comb open grip english style, ebony tip, banded barrel sling swivel and front sight; all that good stuff. I am leaning toward a receiver sight on this one and not a barrel rear sight. Close as I'll ever get to bow hunting is good iron sights and my eyes are too old for the little notch on a blade.

Not to totally hijack the thread, but what stock are you using? Just a thought, also, you might want to move up 1/2 notch on barrel size. A thin 21" barrel might make the rig a bit whippy in the handling department. Ain't it great how nice those cartridges feed?

You betcha! Got the action and the stock, just poking around eBay waiting for the right barrel to come up. If I run out of patience I'll get Pac-Nor to chamber it up in the lightest contour and about 21". They already have the reamers.

It's not up on the to do list yet, though.

That's the whole reason I bought this Prohunter....I've got a Mauser action surface ground and square to the world, just waiting for a barrel and suitable stock.

For what these Prohunter's are bringing used, I figured I could play with this one and the cartridge before committing a good receiver to the modifications necessary, and come out all right on the deal.

I was thinking a #4 contour Shilen, barrel band, with a receiver sight as well. In an Old Classic or British Stalker style stock.

For what it's worth, the Dakota screw-on 1/4 ribs are cheap through Brownell's and pre-fit to a #3 and #5 Shilen and two Douglas profiles also. Never used one so I don't know how close they are to being properly fitted. The #5 Shilen is proportional to the two stocks you mention as they come from GAG. My Express is going on a strict diet and lose about 1/4 inch most places and the #5 will look too bulky.

Hey Tigger,
Are you going to build one on a 1999 action?
22" Barrel?

The recoil of the 376 Scout will definately get your attention. It will also flatten the heck out of the bullet tips in the extra magazine. I use the 270 Swift A-Frames with the flat Meplat to somewhat mitiate this problem. They shoot great I hope you enjoy yours!.....DJ

I think the Varget is a very good call. My BL-C2 loads were a touch tighter and quicker than my Varget loads, but the temperature and pressure stability trump all that fluff.
Try the 270 gr Fail Safe bullet just for fun. My rifle just loves them, and they beat up the magazine instead of the other way around.
Those factory loads are good for jack rabbits, and making brass.
The only difference betwen the Hornady 225 grain bullet and the 270 grain bullet is, ah, 45 grains.

Bryan,

I don't think they will interchange (drop in) either from looking at my Steyr Scout and the ProHunter .376.

I can't use the iron sights well on the ProHunter either, although I can get down enough for emergency use. I carry two magazines in the field -- one in the rifle, and one in my pocket.

My current plan is to take the .376 on a Cape buff hunt in August of '05. My loads will be North Fork 300 grain bullets. I am figuring to work up a load with Varget, but it is not done yet.
