Here's the project: Change out the plastic rotary safety and trigger for something more "conventional". Replace the plastic magazine with a standard mag and follower. Bottom metal-trigger guard and floor plate from Rem 700?. Wrap the whole package in an Accrabond mannlicher stock designed to be fired by a human being.
Smith is figuring out the safety-trigger-metal but any suggestions would be helpful. I've contacted Accrabond but I'm not putting plastic pieces into a stock. I just thought it would make a great little Mannlicher with a big boom.
Thanks,
Jeff

Gents,
I guess I should have added that I'm mostly looking for trigger and safety combinations. Was wondering if anyone else had done anything like this with a Steyr.
Thanks,
Jeff

You know you just insulted the pro-hunter designer. He thought he "was" designing the perfect human user-friendly rifle. Ergonomics they call it?

Jeff,

I suspect it will be a whole lot cheaper to build a .376 Steyr on a rifle that already has the features that you want. I used my ProHunter .376 on one African hunt, and I found it to be handy. The features you wanted to change out I thought worked well. Of course I have been using a Steyr Scout extensively since '98, and I am used to the configuration of the Steyr SBS96 rifles.

Loading a SBS96 action from the top would not be easy. If you could not just pop in a new magazine, trying to load a conventional magazine through the very small ejection port would I think be beyond my chubby little fingers. ; )

Didn't mean to insult anyone but the sharpness of the stock knocks the snot out of me. A pad puts my eyes too high. I had another steyr rifle years ago that was a "sniper" rifle. Ergonomics for that function were nice. But for this short little gun, it just doesn't point and shoot the way I want it.

Jim: valid point. I can drop one in but pushing it down wouldn't work well.

I've put a lot of time and effort into this gun and I do like it. I'd use it for just about anything but I'm no different than anyone else on here. Always want something better or different. Plus the Accrabond stock on my 416 taylor is just about the nicest thing I've shot with in a long time. Close your eyes, shoulder it, open your eyes and you're on the sights.

Maybe I'll look at doing something different.

Thanks for the advice.

Jeff

Jeff,
you might this about starting with a CRF model 70 in 308 or 30/06 270... they are fairly common....

might could trade/sell your 376 prohunter and get there, for loads cheaper than reworking the PH
