I'm sending a No.1 to Pacnor for a 220 Swift barrel. The Pacnor rep launched into a discussion of the quarter rib attachment and told me more than I wanted to know. I'd like to just true everything up and install it in the factory fashion. Pacnor expressed the concern that usually tension, to one degree or another, is created between the quarter rib and the barrel resulting in a loss of accuracy. Would appreciate your experiences.
good shooting.

Chris is a pretty sharp cookie about barrels and making a rifle shoot...I would take any advice he gave me as he wants his customers to be happy and let's face it, if the rifle doesn't shoot as you anticipated I expect the new barrel will bear the brunt of the blame.

From this we are led to believe then no scope. No one can mount blocks and a scope and come out with less stress. What's Pac-Nor's proposal to solve this problem? I gotta hear this.

The rifle is in the mail with the request for consultation on this point. I'll happily share the results. So far the options are make the best of fitting the original quarter rib, machine a raised rib on the barrel blank with a top radius that will accept small radius bases or extend the breach diameter portion for small radius bases and then step down like old FN's. I'll try to stay original. I agree that everything you screw on has the potential to cause stress, but in most cases the stress is on the receiver, not the barrel itself like a No.1.

I am looking into rebarreling a #1 & have talked quite a bit w/ MIke @ Broadcreek Rifle works. They specialize in #1's & he pretty much says the same about the 1/4 rib. He can retrue & install the rib w/ a little loss in accuracy, but he prefers the rib off. If I was looking for a bench rest rifle I wouldn't spend the money on a #1. If it shoots MOA w/ hunting loads and still looks as good as it should, I'll be more than happy.

Here's a good link to a discussion on what to do about the 1/4 rib on the Ruger #1. I've got a 1B and think it's the nicest looking rifle I own. I have not tried the method described in this article, because I am quite happy with 1 MOA for all my hunting purposes. Mine is a stock .30-06 bbl rechambered by Ray Montgomery to .30 Gibbs. Oh yeah the discussion is found at Roy's Precision Shooting website. Best of luck to you.
