Hey guys a friend of mine bought a Stevens rifle (Same as the Savage 110) in 30-06. Action is in great shape but the bore is pitted pretty bad.

He doesn't want to spend a ton of money on it but wants me to put a 25-06 barrel on it.

I see ER Shaw makes drop in barrels and has them in stock for $200. I know you get what you pay for, but are these any good. Not looking to make it sub 1 MOA but just a gun his kids can use deer hunting etc.

Anyone had decent luck with ER Shaw barrels? Cost is a big factor to him on this rifle.

You nailed it, you get what you pay for. Shilen also makes a drop in and they are great barrels

Not sure how much more expensive they are, but CBI (Criterion Barrel Inc.) makes really good barrels. Northwest shooter supply handles them I believe. Great reviews of accuracy. Also X-Caliber barrels has a pretty strong following and makes very good shooters too. Both are a little less than the Shilen I think.

To answer your question though, YES, the ER Shaw barrel will shoot acceptably well, and maybe even exceptionally well for what you want to do.

Shoot straight, shoot often.

I rebarreled a small ring Mauser, 7 x 57 using a Shaw barrel. Worked out well. Shot OK with factory ammo. Reloading a variety of bullets and loads while breaking in the barrel. Shoots both Remington Coreloks and Nosler Partition bullets very well with different loads.... Often about 1 MOA when I am shooting well.

Well I went with the ER Shaw. The old barrel nut took some serious umpf to get off. Either it was put on way to tight or had some rust under it. Hard to tell because I soaked it in Kroil for 24 hours and heated it occasionally to help the Kroil penatrate. We will see how it shoots next weekend.

I had a .243 built on a '17 Enfield, and just got my .300win Enfield rebarrled.
Both Shaw's.

I've only fired them into a bullet trap in the shop at 15 feet half dozen times each.
Haven't been to the range yet.

The original military barrel on the .300 was alligatored clear to the muzzle real bad. IT still made inch 5 shot groups with 200gr G/K's. Better with those than it ever did with 180's.

Back in '99 in the middle of fur season and no money to spare I put a A&B from Midway on a Sako L461 .223, that cost $70.
Amazingly, it'll put ten shots into less than 1/4". That's as cheap a barrel as I've ever seen. I sure never expected that kind of grouping with it.

You'll be happy with the Shaw I'll bet.
Once you've gotten the loads figured out and shot a few, hope you'll let us know how it does.

George

Will do George. With shipping and tax total was $217. Not a bad deal if it shoots decent.
