Is that a Model 700? The bolt looks like it's brazed on.

Well, I don't know... I'm a bit of a hick but I think that's a pretty good home remedy for a beater rifle that could sit in the bottom of a canoe. Besides, I like the exquisite patina on the stove bolt Big Grin

What would rather have a rilfe that is useless or one with a Bolt handle.

Some times one does what one has to do.

I doubt if that came from D'Arcy's shop!

Before such a nice slow rust job he could at least have checkered the hex head.

Well, if I was poor, and needed to make the rifle work, I'd probably do the same thing..

I guess that this proves the old saying that "necessity is the mother of invention". In this case, an ugly mother, but functional.

I am sure if that rifle could talk it would probably have a few pretty good stories to tell--when i was growing up there were a few ranchers that would have been plum happy to use it for what it was made for--putting supper on the table--killing coyotes etc.

Is that a grade VIII bolt??

My first centerfire bolt action rifle was a bubba-sporterized 6.5 Arisaka. The bolt handle had been replaced with a rather graceful checkered-butterknife handle. Granted I was rather young at the time but it was about a year before I looked at it and realized it was made from an old plier handle!

Do you notice how the bolt transitions from flat threads to round? You pay for custom work like that!

I'm pretty sure thats a Rem 788. Not that I recognize the handiwork or anything.....

I did get a big silly grin when I saw it though. I'm sure it's funtional, and probably more durable than the original. Nate

Looks like it would have been easier to just buy a new bolt for that Rem. Model 788. Razzer

Every once in a while one of my customers asks my why I gave up hunting. I useualy give em a one eye'd squint and dryly remark that from some of the guns that I have seen and worked over the years there are some mighty strange folks out in the bush during hunting season !!!! Then I wink at em and go back to work !!!!

When I was a kid. I had the stick. I had the rock. And I had the mud puddle. I am as adept with them today, as I was back then. Lets see today's kids say that about their IPods, IPads and XBoxes in 45 years!

I should see if I can get some pics of a home built 50 BMG at one of the local shops. It has huge nuts welded together for the action. There is a lock nut to set the headspace on the mil surp barrel. Square tube for the stock, an external hammer in the lower square tube that comes up to hit the fireing pin in the shell holder bolt.
