Of the currently available, easy to find, surplus Mausers on the US market, which would you pick for an 8mm/06 project, and why that one? Plan to shoot mostly Nosler 200-grain Partitions in it......

I think I'd lean towards a good VZ-24. They aren't as available as they were 5 or 6 years ago but they're still out there and priced relatively reasonable. There's lots of 48's and 24/47's out there too, but they're not the full sized 98. I put together an '06 on a Yugo 48 one time, it worked, but the shorter mag box was a hindrance.

I'd look for a VZ24 with a good bore and leave it as an 8MM Mauser.

Already have plenty of plain vanilla 8x57 rifles. During the early 70's had numerous 8m/m-06 and 8m/m-06-Ackley rifles and actually preferred them. This is sort of a "nostalgia" project, so the chambering is set in stone already. Just want to pick one of the better actions from those currently available.

Thanks again.

A case full of H-380 and a 200 gr. Nosler partition @ 2730 fps in a 8/06 makes a damn good black bear gun and would settle a grizzly's hash quite well. Thats what I used on a couple of blackies years ago north of Ft. St. John. I have always been fond of the round and have had mine for 30 years. Its on a military BRNO stocked mannlicher style with a 20" stepped barrel. Good practical round.

An 8mm-06 is the perfect cartridge for one of those cheap Turks floating around everywhere. Get a hold of a LR barrel with a good bore and turn the threads down to SR thread, remove the handguard counterbore, and blast away.

Use the VZ for something bigger...

The long barreled 8mms with 29.5" barrels are heavy, but get the same performance as a 22" 300 win mag, but more weight.

My 10.5 pound 8mms, like a 1903 Turk, get 2675 fps with 220 gr hot loads and 2630 fps with 200 gr and wimpy loads.

Those 1903 Turks are costing me $45 on sale with free shipping, and 10% have pristine bores.

Look for an older commercial FN from Husky, sears, browning, Higgens, etc.

Many are bought for a heck of a lot less than you'll pay to convert a milsurp mauser.

A C,

May I make a suggestion? Since the 8x06 is a reload proposition only.........why not go for a 8x57 Ackley Improved? Fits any/all mauser actions...VZ24,Yugo 24,47 & 48 and will come very close to 8mm-06 ballistics. And, if you want, allows heavy bullets to be seated without going too far into the case which the 8mm-06 has a real problem. Just a suggestion...you do what you feel best.

The 8-06 is actually quite a number. It is the cartridge in the -06 familly which pushes the heaviest bullet at SD .275 above 2800 f/s, the 200 grainer. A .338-06 will push a 200 grainer faster, but with lower SD. The .30-06 will push a bullet at the same SD at the same velocity, but in a lighter bullet, 180 grs.
200 grs bullet, SD.274, Vo 2800f/s is quite fabulous from an -06!

Good luck!
