when I stop by my gunsmith buddy's place, I always look around to see what people bring in. He showed me a Savage pistol, it was old, I think the guy that brought it in told him 1917, but who knows. What was interesting was it didn't have a screw one in it, I don't think the grips even screwed on. It was in very good shape and looked to be a shooter. I didnt even know Savage made pistols, he took it apart for me, very well engineered, kinda interesting. He also had a fairly new savage lever action mdl 99, 22-250 that he had put what looked to be 16", match grade shilen barrel on for a guy, what we call a truck gun in south texas, kinda short and funny looking, but thats what the guy wanted.

Back in 1981 in Hawaii I was on my way to have coffee at Sizzler over by the KMCAS base. 0500 hrs, dark and all that. Also garbage day. There on the side of the road in my headlights were 4 garbage cans FULL of rifles. I got them loaded as I heard the garbage truck coming down the hiway. Noone was home. I came back for three days and finally caught the owner home in the process of dumping MORE stuff. I ended up with 34 rifles[2 DBL rifles] and more old loading gear than you`d believe. Seems her husband had died rather unexpectedly and left her the chore of cleaning out his gun/trophy room. She was more than glad to have someone take it who wanted it. No kids survivors etc. She didn`t know what to do with the stuff. I offered to pay for them and she finally let me make a donation of 1,000.00 to the Red Cross[not my first choice] in her/our names. If I hadn`t gotten them off the street the refuse guys would probably have dumped them in the landfill and they`d have been gone forever. I even got a [legal] Leopard mount that is absolutely beautiful. Once in a while a guy gets lucky! Aloha, Mark[in Or]

Holy chit mark thats unbelievable... I found a rifle onetime in the mountains, we think it fell out of a scabard off a horse. We put up fliers, and an ad in the local paper. But no takers. It wasn't anything special, just an old M70 pre-64 270...

Ivan: Damn, I'm glad to read your post! I lost that rifle a while back, and I've been looking EVERYWHERE for it. To make sure it's the same rifle: the rifle I lost had blued steel, a checkered walnut stock and had "Winchester" and "270" stamped in the barrel. It may or may not have had a scope. If the rifle you found matches the above description, I would really appreciate it if you would just ship it to me postage due. Brian
