Can it be done???
In my gun cabinet there is a Mauser model 91 that is here to stay because of sentimental reasons. Was thinking of having it rebarreled to .300 Savage for ease of reloading. I am thinking if the Savage 99 will handle the pressure of the .300 maybe the '91 will also. I realize it needs to be inspected before it has any work done on it.

the saami for the 300 sav is lower than the cip for the 8 mauser.

the 99 as a referent is not a valid choice, as the 99 is built for 308, 243, and 358, 60kpsi rounds

I believe it is currently chambered for the 7.65.

Jeff,
What would be a good candidate for this gun?

Ive always pondered a 250-3000 or 300 Savage.

In eihther, it would make a dandy deer rifle.

The 91's were IMO all beautifully made and worthy of that custom touch.

7.65 Argentine itself is not a bad round, capable of anything a 300 Savage is.

The 7.65 is a fine round but you might consider the 7x57 mm also.

Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

The 7.65 can do anything the .308 win can do!

Joe,
as it's been said, the 7.65 is a good round. The 300 sav is a fun round. If the rifle has sentimental value to you, but not the "caliber" make it the 300 you want.

Me? find a stash of surplus ammo, fire away, and use the brass. It's probably mercury primed, or "corrosive" so you would need to first dip the cases in vineger, then soapy water ...

mercury makes salts, salts are (usually) basic, wineger counters the salts, soap is basic, and counters the vineger

don't forget to clean your barrel asap

Before you change it to something else, make sure they'll feed through the magazine.

I was going to change one to 7.62x39 'till I tried feeding them through the magazine.

It didn't work worth a darn so I scrapped that idea.

Really, ammo and/or components are readily available for the 7.65x53. And it's a very good round.
