A friend wants a black matte finish for his stainless Ruger 77MkII. I told him he could go the teflon coating route after rebarreling but later remembered Pac-Nor(or certain 'smiths) can blue stainless. My question is has anyone had a stainless rifle blued in matte finish? Was it a flat black in color? Thanks for any replys. sure-shot

I have a Weatherby MK"V" Laminated Stainless Steel Rifle which has a matte blued barrel and reciever. Yes, I'd say it appears to be black instead of a deep blue.

I saw a buddy's rifle the other day that he just got back from Pac-Nor. It has their matte "bluing" on a stainless barrel. It is a deep black & looks wonderful.

My question is can you match a CM receiver to a "Blued" SS bbl by using the same process.

The CM should be able to be matched close enough for horseshoes or hand grenades.

I think you need special blueing salts to make SS black. If you use blueing salts for CM steel, the SS comes out grey.
