Going under the knife. Update 4/30/09 Blank Turned
It's about that time.
The Mini Mauser stock is about to become a reality.
Remember this?
The pattern is complete and the blank has been choosen. This one gets the knod. I was saving it for an upcoming project but who knows when that'll happen so I figured now was as good a time as any to use it.
Here the layout James thinks works best. I get a chubby just looking at it

Both sides look very nice. It's going in the machine any day now. Keep James in your prayers

James Anderson is building the stock. Shane Thompson did the metal work.

Nomo4meLooks a lot like the Morrocan wood that was available in the 80's.
Can't wait to see pics of the machined then finished gun.

daniel77I think I see a potential problem in that blank. You'd better ship it to me so I can take a look for you. Hate for you to have a problem later on.

Ian (VA)Terry,
Like everyone else, I've been a big fan of this project, and am very excited to see the shaped stock. Looking at that material, I can't help but think how every square inch of it that gets left out of the final project is a little trajedy... makes it tempting to make a bigger stock than the plan calls for!
This blank has some serious miles on it. I bought it about 4-5 years ago From Denli walnut over in Turkey for a custom I was going to have Greg Hein build for me. I backed out of the project and figured I wouldn't need it anymore and sold it to fla3006. I wished I wouldn't have done it many times. After speaking with Forrest one day about something completely different I asked about the blank and he hadn't done anything with it yet and I caught him in a weak moment and bought it back. This stick of wood has a lot of miles on it

Ian, the linier inch price is astronomical!

I made the same comment to James Anderson and something he said was very true. In reality the stock won't be much smaller than a full sized rifle stock. Just thinner.

Knifemaker,
http://www.mstarling.com A very fine stock, has about all you could imagine. James picked the better layout in the blank and it looks to be a stylish pattern. The forend looks disproportionatly short, but cutting the extra off the butt and 1 1/2" of ebony out front should cure that.

I think I'm going to call James and tell him to throw my blank away. It looks like a piece of birch next to yours. After he is done give Roger Kehr a few grand and it will be ready!

KabluewyTerry,
Did you say somewhere that the depth of the magazine had been reduced to make the overall depth of the finished stock slimmer? From a different perspective - will this stock pattern work for a mini mauser action, factory specs?

Yes, the box has been been cut down about 1/8" so, no this pattern won't work for a stock rifle. We need to talk James into building a nice pattern for a stock rifle. I've got a semi custom that I'm not real happy with the stock on it. I'd love to get him to turn a new stock for it.

KabluewyThanks Terry for the info. This is all very interesting, and it's easy to get motivated. I have been assembling, with the help of two gunsmiths, sequentially not simultaneously, a mini which was intended for the 7.62x39, but I want a 6.5 Grendel on it. Accordingly, I have no intentions of reducing magazine capacity.
I already have a lot more into it than initially intended. I make no pretense that I'm in the deep end of the pool when it comes to this arena of the toys of the big boys with the deep pockets. However, I do want this rifle to be finished out nicely, but having a stock as nice as the one here in your pictures is not in my dreams. I'm relatively sure the cost of the blank alone exceeds what I'll have in my whole project, including scope.
After seeing the details of your project, there is no way to trump that, or even show something comparable. I'm just going for a rifle that is technically correct as far as function, feeding, accuracy, etc. and is unique, pretty and interesting at the deer camp. I really want a rifle to use frequently in the right situations, as in no proximity to salt water.

It doesn't have to be the best, only something you want.
I've got a few rifles I did the stock work on that aren't in the same ballpark as this one. I enjoyed building them and I shoot and hunt with them every year. This rifle doesn't change any of that.
Everybody wants something nice but 1st and foremost it's about fun. Just do the best you can and make no excuses or apologies.
