Is it possible and safe to rechamber a Savage model 110 30-06 to a 300 Win Mag? Another option I was considering was rebarelling. On the other hand should I just start over and buy one.

Yes you can. While the .300 should clean up the '06 chamber nicely I still would want to set the barrel back a thread and then rechamber. But some barrels aren't good candidates for rechambering. The present chamber has to be almost perfectly concentric in order to have a satisfactory result. So many factory barrels are not that rechambering is becoming history in a lot of gun shops. I still do it under certain conditions but if the chamber is not true to the bore I'll turn it down. Rechambering would be your least expensive option but I'd recommend rebarreling. Talk it over with your local smith and see what he thinks. George

I had a M-70 rechambered from 30-06 to 30-338 and it worked great. I was able to use the original follower and the feed rails were opened to accept the magnum case. It should be a easy conversion. John.

Keep in mind that the bolt face will have to be opened up to accomodate the larger base of the 300 WM.

Can this be done on a Savage 110?

Mauser 98,
I guess that opening the bolt face could be done similar to a Remington using a Sako style extractor. But the easier way to do it is to order a replacement bolt face from Sharp Shooter Supply. All you have to do is push out a pin replace the bolt face return pin and your done. That is why Savages make great multi-barrel rifles. Quick barrel change and you don't have to stick with one head size. Sean

Thank you for that information. I had no idea one could do as you described with a Savage 110. I just assumed.

The Savage 110 has a "floating" bolt head. You can change the bolt head from an '06 to a magnum. About $15 for another bolt head but it is a restricted part, sold to FFLs only. Available at Brownells, Gun Parts and probably a lot of other places.
