How to make 300 H&H

For few years I have been dreaming about having a rifle in 300 H&H. However it seems impossible to get one in that particular caliber and I think eventually I have to get one made for me.

So the question: Which modern actions can handle 300H&H or better said which action would you recommend for 300H&H (especially cheap standard actions)? For example I could get CZ 550 in 300WinMag relatively cheap. Or how about Tikka? Is there any Tikka action capable to handle 300H&H?

There is a good chance that I will be starting on one myself very shortly, unless I go for a smaller caliber. I plan on using the Montan Rileman 1999 Long Action (actually desinged for H&H caliber length)

Now that I have a 300 H&H and have shot it, hunted with it and loaded for it I have been there and done that. To be frank the long cartridge does not make up into the best gun for actual use.

But the 300 H&H is a dream thats real and fun to contemplate. I suggest that you shop for an existing 300 H&H rifle, maybe one that has some wear marks and is of a classic make such as an orginal M70 or English origin.

So hunt with your practical regular gun and search the shops and net for a nice classic 300 H&H and have fun.

Many people have either been slamming this as a worthless caliber, or promoting it as the best. There is a thread on an African forum that has had mixed results about this caliber, but over 70% prefer it to the WSM.

Being as tall as I am the long action and barrel means nothing, especially when your armspan is 6'9"

Thank you for the Link Savage 99. It's nice rifle at nice price.

Unfortunately I am european so the good 300H&H supply of US doesn't help me too much. The only rifle on sale that I know (around here) is Remington 721 in Sweden.

Dr.JA, being in Europe you might look for a vintage FN or other fine European Mauser. If I'm not mistaken, Sako and possibly HVA made some rifles based on commercial FNs in 300H&H.

If you can look for a Steyr Mannlicher in 300 H&H. I shot one of these and they are super accurate, smooth actions and fit really nice.

The 300H&H is a full (magnum) length cartridge, the 300Winnie is a 30-06 length cartridge. The least expensive and easiest option (assuming you can't find one already chambered for the 300H&H) would be to pick up a rifle that's chambered for the 375H&H (or other belted, magnum length cartridge) and rebarrel it to 300H&H.
375H&H = 9.5x73B Max OAL 3.600"
300H&H = 7.62x72B Max OAL 3.600"
300Win Mag = 7.62x66B Max OAL 3.340"
30-06Sprg.= 7.63x63 Max OAL 3.350"
308 Win = 7.62x51 Max OAL 2.810"

Dr.JA, Here is what I did. I took a Winchester M70 Classic in 7 rem-mag and went from there. The M70 long action works great for the .300H&H Just cut the spacer out of the magazine, shorten the the bolt stop about .10", rebarrel and you're in business. Some people say the loading port on the action has to be opened up, but it's never been a problem or a hindrance on mine. It functions flawlessly and feeds & ejects loaded or empty cartridges very smooth.

Tailgunner, I know that 300H&H needs the same action length as 375H&H. CZ 550 should have the same magnum action in both 300WinMag and 375H&H. At least they claim so on their web pages.

Especially I would be interested to know if there is any Tikka actions that can, with some modifications, handle 300H&H.

RayO, that Remington 721 is probably a nice rifle but it is in Sweden and I am not. I wouldn't like to order a second hand rifle from some other country without possibility to see it first.

The Remington 700 long action is long enough for the 300 H&H. A Weatherby Mark V action is also long enough.
