.45-90 reline or rebarrel

I have an 1886 Winchester chambered for .45-90. Bore is rough and when slugging the barrel, there is resistance from the muzzle end for about 10 inches then the bullet falls the rest of the way through the barrel.

Gun has been refinished and had the wood replaced, therefore collector value is pretty much ruined.

What diameter is necessary for a barrel liner?

Barrel is half Octogon, half round (really about 2/3 Octagon) and 21" long.

Barrel markings are nice, but the length does not appear to be original. Muzzle is .815 in diameter. Too thin to reline I suspect.

What about cutting the barrel at the transition and turning a blank down to use as a sleeve and extend forward for the rest of the barrel.

I am concerned that a "step" here would effect barrel harmonics, but perhaps no more than the stepped military barrels. (even though the step would be reversed.

Final option is a new barrel altogether and either having the markings roll stamped or left off all together.

Any options, ideas or information is appreciated.

Jeff,

Since it's already refinished and new wood, might as well just do a new barrel. Lots easier and cheaper in the long run. Results will be better as well I believe. I also have an 1886, mines 45-70. I do love it, I just wish it had the "shotgun" butt, instead of the steel crescent butt. Not comfy with hot handloads, but very easy to shoot standard pressure stuff.

Jeff: Contact Randall Redman(Redman's Rifling &Reboring 189 Nichols Rd. Omak WA 98841 509-826-5512)concerning your '86. He can answer all your questions. He may not want to reline a 45-90( I think they like to reline "milder" calibers) - have you considered a rebore to 50-90? You get to retain the orginal barrel etc. I just had a 50AE low wall built - I'm a bit of a fifty fan! Pleasure to speak to a fellow Tennessean.

Big Bores is correct about it being cheaper overall to rebarrel since the orginal barrel has been cut and refinishing work has been done to the rifle. If you want to retain the orginal barrel, contact Randall Redman @ 509-826-5512. Mr. Redman is well known for relining (I don't know if he will want to reline a 45-90 - they seem to like to reline milder calibers?)and reboring. Have you considered a 50-90? Good luck with it - it needs to be shot and enjoyed!
