I have just bought an old B&L Custom scope, with mounts made for a Remington 760 pump-action. Without removing the present scope to find out: are the mounts likely to fit our 7600 .35 Whelen (maybe 15 years old)?

no the 760 bases won't fit the 7600 receiver, the screw sizes are also larger on the 7600, they're 8-40 not 6-48 as with the 760

If the spacing is the same a drill and 8-40 screws will fix it.

A friend of mine bought a 760, couldn't find mount with the right holes, so we bought a one-piece Weaver mount that fit the contour of the receiver and drilled/counterbored a new hole in it to fit the existing tapped holes in the receiver. I dunno...

Thanks guys,
since there would not be a proper B&L Custom mount for the later rifle, I might butcher the old one to make it fit, maybe using the existing base as a jig.

If the holes are close, is it possible to drop weld into the old ones and start again?

I don't see why one couldn't weld the old holes shut

Thanks pds, the mounts have arrived in lots of pieces - a heavy package (no wonder they made the scopes light). Will look into the holes soon.

Cheers
