Could a M-98 Mauser extractor and bolt face be made to work with an 06 size case head as well as a win mag size head, or RUM? If not, is there a place to get inexpensive Mauser bolts from?
I'm wanting to try a couple of different things on my VZ-24.
TIA

Lar45,

If you're talking dual purpose then no. Once these are open, you are pretty well stuck using that size case head. There would be no practical way to set up one action to house and feed both size cases. You might check with www.e-gunparts.com for spare bolts though.

Good luck,

Malm

It looks like for that price then I could just pick up a whole gun at Big 5. I guess I'll have to buy another gun. Oh darn. [Frown]

One way might be to turn down the rim on the belted cartridge, making it a rebated rim belted wildcat. I don't think that is a good idea, but maybe I don't understand your project. How would you use a dual-purpose bolt? Do you have corresponding chamber adapters?

I have a VZ24 action that I want to try some different barrels on. I've got a couple of 8x57 takeoff barells from folks here, and I'm going to try makeing my own chamber reamers for something like the 3200 Hawk on the 30-06 case and then a RUM case cut to 2.5" with minimum body taper. Then use them both on the same gun to play with. I think I'll pick up some LEE RBG dies, $14.95, and try reaming them out for loading dies. I was just kind of hopeing that if I opened the bolt face and extractor enough to work with the RUM case that I'd still be able to switch back to the 06 case later.

For your dies you will be better off starting from scratch. Even with the cheaper Lee dies they will be tough to ream. I would buy the innards and make the body. Just my experience though.Mark
