Who would be recomended for a new barrel on a commercial mauser? It is 30-06 now, has a bad chamber from lack of care for many years (rusted and pitted beyound polishing) and while the rifleing is in pretty good shape, I want another .280. I whoul like a medium taper barrel and the main use is hunting, so 1/4 min of angle accuracy is plenty (LOL) I am thinking Shaw, but other suggestions?

Is it safe to let for a 58 year old man run around in the woods unsupervised with a high powered rifle?

If you are not doing the work I'd check http://www.itdcustomgun.com/ We added it up a week or two ago. Douglas barrel installed, test fired and blue for the cost of a Shaw installed.

As usual just my $.02

Any time I look for a barrel these days, I look to Douglas as Shaw has such terrible delivery times.....16 weeks for a blank and up to 6 months for an installed barrel. Price is one thing.....getting it is another.

Abbott and Bennett might do you but many here report accuracy as spotty and I find them either heavy or not available that I no longer look for them....if they want to be in the business they have to have the product and often they don't.

When it comes to the generally accepted brands such as Dougles, Shilen, Hart, Krieger, Pac Nor, MRC, and several others.....as long as one is looking to a hunting rifle I'm not sure that there's much difference except price.....and money still means something to me!

Pick them depending on your prejudices.....I'm sure you get something for the extra cost....but not sure what it is.

I had a gunsmith install a Shilen barrel on my 7mm Rem Mag (26") and you can actually shot three shots in the same hole at 100 yards. I've shot 162gr Hornaday and 175gr Nosler partitions with the same accuracy.

I've heard that Hart and Douglas Supreme make good barrels also. Good Luck and good shooting.

Judge,

I am waiting for a barrel from Shaw now.. turn around is out to 16 weeks...

there production capabilities is getting swamped with AR barrels as people are concerned about the Democrats getting back in power and outlawing all sorts of stuff once again...

At least according to Shaw's staff...

My barrel is running me $150.00 delivered....It is chambered in 223...

I figure for that price, it was worth a try....As someone put it, even a low cost after market barrel is better than most factory barrels......

I am also looking at ordering a barrel from Lothar Walther there in Georgia...I am hearing good things about them....

I have tried about half a dozen or more Pac Nor barrels over the years and have always had good luck with their products...

cheers

I have Shilen barrels on my 20BR, 7-08AI, 300WinMag, and 338WinMag. I've never had a reason to complain about Shilen, and they stand behind their product. Check out the price you can get on a Shilen in 7mm from Bruno's at
