If you flic/flip off a win. 3 position safty and are close to a deer sometimes you get busted. So I try to gently move it forward, thumb and index finger, and still get a slight clic. Mauser same deal. Are CRFs noisier than push feeds? Not to mention reloading for a back up shot. Any way to minimize the noise?

CRF and push feed have nothing to do with it. The safety lever and cocking piece engagements can be made to work silently.

Yup, some are silent, others click. Like Duane said they can be made quiet.
I find that shooting at the deer does such a good job letting him know I'm there manipulating the noise of operating the bolt is the least of my worries. That said, done with alacrity the noise of a proper bolt flick is concealed by the report.

I find that working things like safeties slowly and maybe using a tiny bit of lubricant goes a long way towards making them quiet in the field. I'm not sure if there's anything you can do to silence a bolt action cycling. I'm not sure cycling the both really makes that much difference - the cat is definitely out of the bag when you fire that first round. Jason "Chance favors the prepared mind."

I agree you have everyones attention after the fist shot but the noise is so shocking that( depending on the distance from the animals) they may well freeze and try to determine where the danger is coming from. (shot echo) When you rack the bolt -- they will locate you and leave in the opposite direction very quickly. another source of hunter noise are squeaking sling swivels. Lee

If a fella learns to operate the bolt from the shoulder during recoil he'll be back on target with a live round in the chamber before the sound of the shot dissipates. Of course the best solution is to shoot the critter so dead it doesn't matter what he thinks of any extra noise you might make.

I was thinking about the next critter.

I recall reading somewhere that the most serious ivory hunters carried double rifles fitted with extractors and hammers so as to be able to reload and recock silently while in the midst of a herd of upset elephants. I wish that were our problem these days...

Might be time to invest in an AR-10 type rifle then. Jason "Chance favors the prepared mind."
