Thanks to you and Chic Worthing for giving me the fortitude and knowledge to rehab a stock which well and truly needed it. I derived immense satisfaction from adding a ’shooter’ to my scattergun options pretty much by my own hands.

The gun is a Sterlingworth 20 ga that had a crack in the wrist (another story) , and as with the old guns, the stock was short and the checkering was well worn but all present. You replied to my query about the checkering and told me what tools to buy and how to bring it back. I did as directed and it worked out very well. I’ve since brought up the checkering on an old “shooter class†L.C. Smith that’s also in rehab.

I wanted to extend the length of pull on the stock without making it look too grotesque and I just didn‘t know how to do it. Your pic sequence (posted elsewhere?) that showed the steps in covering a pad combined with Chic’s narrative on subject, plus a tip or two here and there, encouraged me to epoxy a 1/8†spacer on a 1†pad and cover it. This was then installed with a ¼†spacer between pad and butt so I picked up a bit of l.o.p., and in my biased view, it don’ look bad on an old shooter. It’s obvious but it don’ look bad. I do think however, that the extra 1/8†on the pad surely made it some tougher to cover, especially for a rookie. I have most of a whole pigskin ($35 from Tandy) left over so more leather covering is in my future. I can’t say I look forward to doing my next one but at least my trepidation level will be way down when I do it.

Thanks again to you and Chic. Y’all really helped me do something that I’ve wanted to do for a long time.

Please post a picture, I'd like to see what becomes of the edge on the leather to finish it.
Congratulations on stepping up and doing it!

Darn right I want a picture. I have a rifle with the same problem. Built the thing with a LOP with a heavy coat in the mountains for elk. Only issue now is I use a different rifle for elk and this one gets used in TX in shirt sleeves and the pull is now to short.

As usual just my $.02

A picture is often worth a thousand words and often worth more depending on who's typing the words Smiler

Whoaaaaaaa, dudes……… (expletive deleted) I had no expectations of much response to this post and I surely did not expect requests for pics. It’s just a shooter class Sterlingworth...., and I don’t even own a digital camera although there might be one in the Christmas upcoming. I think my neighbor has one so I’ll see what I can do one way or the other. And needless to say, I don’t know how to post pics so someone will have to volunteer to do that for me.

ramrod340: Thanks for posting the pics, and thanks for your favorable comments. I think this looks way better than a 1 1/2" pad. Hopefully, it will look even better when the leather is dyed.
