333_OKHCustom 376 Steyr???
I cannot remember who had a custom 376 Steyr made. I am already thinking about rifle #2 a clone of my 6.5X55 and this round should fit nicely into the MRC RH SA.
Who has one? How is it loaded with 300 grains?

I made one on a VZ-24 3or4 yrs back,22" #5 Douglas bbl, 300g @ 2440fps if I recall correctly. A very potent round for Kenai 5.5' Black Bears

I have one, but mine is factory built. For California game, both 4 and 2 legged, I think the handiest bullet would be the 235 gr. Speer loaded to the hilt. For most other places sheltering somewhat bigger game I'd prefer the 270 gr. bullets. For Kodiak Island, I'd prefer something about 20 m/m

You didn't ask this, but just for info, three friends here have all had custom .376's built by Kurt Mendenhall, and all on Remington M700 actions. They feed with no problems, and appear to have worked flawlessly so far.
My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.

jeffeossoI've built a couple, and I think tiggertate has one in the mrc SA..
i always, at the end of the project, wish I had gone lighter..
with 24" barrel, brass will last forever at 2400fps with 300gr bullets

Bob MehaffeyI have one built on a Mexican Mauser. Mine weighs 10 lbs but doesn't kick much. Very accurate. Nice rifle.

Mike_DettorreI have two. Both mausers 1 on a Brazilian 08 and 1 on a FN created with factory CZ take off barrels.
Both seem to luv the 235 grn TSXs as in sub 3/4 moa
Both will also shoot the 270 grn TSX at sub moa
I think 23 inches is about the right bbl length nad 8.5 lbs scoped and loaded would seem about the right weight. A 2x7 is just about the perfect scope.
One of mine wears a Kahles 2x7 with a duplex reticle and the other a custome leupold 2x7 with a german #4. Here is a picture of the FN in action it has 25 inch bbl in the picture but has since been cutback.
I did not do any load work for 300 grainers but if you want I will do some testing for you.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Mike_DettorreI am serious...if you want to know what achievable velocities are...I have some 300 grn solids around here someplace I load them up and shoot them.

How did you get that bear away from it's mother?

jeffeossoMike,
That the FN in the pic? Looks like an unbobb'ed cz barrel (heh)...I have to agree with you, once you made the point perfectly clear, the 23" is about perfect.. Careful with the 300s, the pressure SPIKES past 2400/2450...

333_OKHInteresting rim Diameter?
13 September 2007, 16:18
jeffeossoshortened 9,3x64, slightly rebated (no CLUE as to why) and necked to 375
I love them
14 September 2007, 01:17
BlueprintedANymore info on necking one up to 416 and taking a bit of the body taper out. Someone here built one. I think the Styer case might be a better shorty than a WSM. 22inch barrle on a Ruger 77 would be a thumper.
14 September 2007, 01:33
jeffeossothat's the 416 aagard... and bob built one of those too!
it's smaller than a WSM, in terms of capacity

tiggertateThe 300 soft points run 2300-2350 with very comfortable pressures from a 20" barrel. There is a very comprehensive article on that by the late Eric Ching; just goggle 376 Styer and Ching. I think it may have been in African Hunter.
