Has anyone rebarreled a Remington Model 7, with the soda straw barrel to 338 Federal or 358 Win.? I am building a stainless rifle for rotten weather, and want a little more punch that the 243.

It looks like I will have to order a magnum contour barrel. I guess that will mean I need to buy a SAUM model 7 stock to fit? Or does someone make a skinny barrel that will fit? Any way to open up a plastic stock to fit the barrel?

My last question, is with both based on the 308 case, should feeding be painless?

Thanks for you help.

A 338Federal or a 358 Win in a Rem Mod 7 would make an excellent rifle. I have used a Mod 7 in 308 quite a bit, and I had one in 350 Rem Mag for a while. The 350 Mag barrel was a little bigger around, but not but much. The rifle was very light and handy.

I have used Mod 7's with 18 and 20 inch barrels, I would not want one longer than 20 inches.
It did have some feeding issues because of the fatter case, a 338 or 358 should feed fine.

Which plastic stock do you have on your 243?

If it is the black plastic one you might be able to just open up the barrrel channel, it it is one of the older guns with the green or camo stock made by Brown Precision, it is fiberglass, I am not sure if you could open it up, with out gerring through the "skin" and into the core or not.

Sorry to be so long. But my old model 7 is the black plastic stock. Sounds like I am good to go and thanks.
