For 40+ years every wood stocked blued shotgun , rifle or handgun that left the shop of Master Gunsmith Ellis Simon was coated with Trewax and every customer was given a tutorial on the proper care of the metal and wood leaving with a can of Trewax. All of the exterior surfaces of my blued steel handguns, shotguns and rifles are coated with trewax.First cleaned with a solvent(naptha or acetone) and or alcohol to remove all traces of oil or any other coating then wiped with a soft cloth then the wax is applied with a soft cloth and allowed to dry, then buffed with another soft cloth, when going hunting we were taught to apply Trewax but not buff it which leaves the metal dull and nonreflective with a protective surface impervious to water or blood. http://www.trewax.com/home.htmlI mentioned trewax on Jesses Hunting & Outdoors Forum and last evening a member emailed me stating he also was taught to use trewax by Gunsmith Ellis Simon and still uses it on all of his weapons,I told him Ellis passed in 1991.
