RogersGunWorksSavage 99 .250-3000 Ackley Imp.
Calling all Savage M1899 experts. I have a Savage 1899 with a worn out barrel and would like to chamber the replacement barrel for the .250-3000 Ackley Imp. I am quite familiar with barrel & chamber work and have re-barreled 1899s back to original cartridges. P.O. Ackley's book says the improved cartridge is great for the M1899 but doesn't mention action alterations. Having once tried to re-barrel a Mannlicher-Schoenauer to a different cartridge than originally chambered for--a task to be avoided--,I'm curious about action modifications for the M1899. I would appreciate comments for those who have actually converted a 250-3000 to the Ackley Improved cartridge. Thanks.

338guyWhat was the original cartridge? Hopefully, it was for a 250 Savage or 243/308. Is it a later model with the 308 length carrier? If it is the later model I would expect a 243 or 308 carrier would allow it to feed without any problems. I would make some dummy rounds up and try them before rebarreling or doing any modifications on the carrier.
I have converted several model 99s from 284 to 338/284. I have also done a couple of conversions from 300 Savage and 308 Winchester to 358 Winchester. I have not done a 250
AI. The critical factor with the Savage 99 seems to be modifying the carrier so the neck and shoulder can have the same relative cartridge orientation as the original cartridge.

plainsman456You will have to open up the carrier in the shoulder area.
