The older I get the less patient I am becoming. While checkering a buttstock for a shotgun last night I got to thinking that a power checkering tool would be kind of handy to go with my Foredom tool. Then I checked the price of a hand tool in the Brownells catalog and decided that I didn't do enough checkering to justify the cost. Do any of you use the M2 or Doiron handpiece and what do you think of it?

I have one of the Doiron power hand pieces and love it. I first bought one one the MMC machines which ran off the Foredom cable drive motors but the cable was a pain in the ass. The Doiron unit I have has the motor in the handle with a small power cable and it is much easier to use. Also, Doiron has a left handed unit available, and of course, I'm left handed.

Now there is one thing about a power checkering machine, You can go to Hell in a hurry. Once you buy one of these machines, don't start on a prized stock... A little practice is in order..

I also use the Doiron tool. I tried a Foredom and also found the cable too restrictive (read as "pain in the ass"). I just got an email from Jon Doiron; he has a slightly used unit for 33% off the regular price.

How's his service on re-sharpening? After two years and several requests "just send the old cutters back" was forced to buy new....his service to old customers sucks!

Duane,
You are right. I know another ACGG member that waited 3 years.

I ordered some carbide hand tools this year COD. I called and Doiron answered the phone and was polite. I faxed the order and received it quickly.

A few years there was a different story. I tried calling & emailing with no response. He still owed me a resharpened cutter for my left handed electric tool.

If you look at the Brownells web site and search for Doiron, everything that comes up under his name says "dropped by Brownells"

Maybe he's getting hungry now and is providing better service????? bewildered
I do like my Doiron electric tool. It's left handed and works much easier than the MMC cable driven unit. There is an adaptor for the MMC head to attach it to the same NSK motor that the Doiron uses. Might be worth looking into if one was buying a new one?

I would never buy an air driven model. The electric one works so well I'm not sure why anyone would want the extra hassle of hooking up to clean air and having to keep the oiler full. The oil has to go somewhere. It's easier to find an electron hose and not have to listen to the compressor start when you're trying to be very careful.

I have an old MMC and like it. I have not tried any of the new ones and it is probably best to not know how much better the new ones are.
