I acquired a few firearms,a bunch of tools and parts and a few barrels from an elderly gengtleman here who was a gunmsith in the military. At one time he was on the army marksmanship team and then for 6 or 7 years he was a smith for them. One of the items I got from him is a take off barrel from a pre 64 Winchester model 70. He said the got the rifle, pulled the barrel and then rebarelled it to something else. The caliber is .22 Hornet and it still has cosmoline in the barrel. It is perfect, unused. Does anyone have any idea of the value of this barrel?

This man also went to the Springfield armory school and gave me all of his manuals that he received there and in the military. Lots of blue prints for 1911's etc. Ended up with a gold mine in parts and pieces. Like a Remington 40X action that they got from big green when they were told to win some European cup. The front threads are about 2" long and it has a permanent recoil lug. Also got a big pip tobacco can almost full of triggers, another full of target sights, one of bases and on and on. Like Christmas.

Anyway if you have some ball park idea of the value I would appreciate it.

Chic,

As you may already know, the barrel will only be worth something to somebody who has an original Hornet, since they are quite a bit different than most of the other Model 70's. The Bolt nose and magazine box were quite a bit different.
Once these rifles were converted, the mag. boxes, followers, and bolt noses were changed- some irreparably. There are precious few still able to be refitted to the Hornet round, and most of them are still Hornets.
No doubt the barrel is worth a substantial amount, but only to someone who has the right action and parts. You might want to try checking with some of the Winchester specialists around the country to see if anyone is looking for a barrel, then negotiate from there. Just my .02 cent's worth- after seeing a lot of ruined 22 Hornets.- Sheister

I have a friend selling a Hornet on the pre-64 model 70. He was trying to get $1800. I will ask if he wants/knows what a brand new one is worth to him.

Wisners used to sell all the parts to convert model 70's to hornet or I was told they do. I am not sure they still do.
