Hi all,

My name is Tom and I am addicted to this website. "Hi Tom!", you say. I have a new to me Winchester 70 in 30.06 that came with a Bell and Carlson Carbelite stock. The stock is in need of inletting at the tang and at the bottom metal. From my previous reading, I understand I should inlet the top first then fit the bottom metal. My question is how much material should I remove from the tang area? I plan to use MarineTex to bed the action afterward. Any other advise for this task would be greatly appreciated also as this is my first attempt at inletting.

Thank you all,
Tom Hughes

Hi Tom!

Welcome to the board. I don't have any advice because I am FAR from an expert at inletting and bedding actions and I have no experience with synthetic stocks or model 70s.

Seems to me you can remove as much material (under the surface) as you want as long as you don't violate any internal walls (if any) and as long as you replace most of it with bedding material. To be on the safe side, I'd only remove as much as necessary.

I'm not familiar with the internal structure of Bell & Carlson stocks. My response will bring this thread to the top though, and evening is when most of the experts come out here. Good luck - John

Hi John! Thank you for your response. I am not sure I will use this stock and am looking for a factory takeoff to replace it. I will use your advice to bed that stock! This website has already been a bad influence and I have started on a new 9.3x62 Mauser project on an old Husqvarna rifle. Oh boy, my wife is going to like this story! "But honey, I really need a dangerous game rifle." Yeah, that's the ticket.

Later,
Tom

Tom,
I don't know who told you to inlett the barreled action first but that is not correct..bed the bottom metal first then you will know how deep to go with the barreled action to match them...IMHO.

remove about 1/8" or less around the tang, but leave a anchor point and undercut all this. then put two layers of electricians tape on the rear of the tang behind the screw hole so as to have a little clearance behind the tang when all is done..

I would check with B&C before you go carving up that stock.

Some fiberglass stocks' strength would be compromised by cutting the exterior layers.

George,

Good advice.

Ray,

Thanks for setting me straight on which end comes first during stock inletting.
