Well, since I can't seem to get rid of my 7mm STW Sendero I though I might rebarrel it. I'm considering the 450 Ackley since it will fit in the magazine and has the same boltface size. Is there any reason why this won't work. Any suggestions?.

I don't know if the stock will take the recoil. Once you determine whether your stock is the H-S Precision model or the B&C clone, contact the manufacturer.

I know that H-S Precision doesn't recommend use of their stocks with the .378Wby. I don't know how far B&C is willing to back their product.

Also, the aluminum bedding block is not designed for use with a secondary recoil lug, which is probably a good idea in a .450 Ackley.

There are other cartridges that will work in that gun without any of the above concerns: .257STW(my choice), .300H&H, .300Wby., .338Win., .340Wby, .358STA, .375H&H.

If you're willing to do a few mods to the bolt-face and magazine, a .330 Dakota or one of the very popular RUMs will fit nicely.

What don't you like about the gun that prompts you to sell it?

efryman,

If someone had taken your 7mm STW off your hands, would you have replaced the rifle? If so, what would you have got.

I built a 450 Ackley on a Rem 700 LA and it worked out extremely well. Replace that crappy extractor with a SAKO and your in builness. Don't forget that you will need a second recoil lug and lots of steel-bed. Good luck.-Rob

I'm not sure wich stock I have. Have always assumed it was the H&S stock. How can you tell?. I was thinking of replacing it with a lighter stock anyways.
I originally bought the rifle when I was stationed in North Carolina. The idea was to use it for long range target shooting. Once I moved here to Alaska, I found it to bee too heavy and cumbersome to lug around in the thick brush moose and bear hunting. With it's flat trajectory it would make a great goat or sheep rifle. But again you have to deal with the weight, humping it around the mountains.
One of the local gun shops have a Remington 700 in 416 Rem Mag with a 21" barrel, express sights and a H&S stock. It is one of the coolest rifles I have seen in a while. It is fairly light and balances perfectly. If I could sell my STW for a decent price, I would get that. But it seems there is not a whole lot of interest in the 7mm STW here in Alaska.
Since I can't get rid of it, I thought I would just re-stock and re-barrel. Get a 21" Pac-Nor barrel and maybe a Mike Bansner stock. I have a thing for the somewhat odd-ball calibers, and I thought the 450 Ackley would fit nicely. No way to get factory ammo, dies are probably expensive as hell and brass is probably both hard to find and expensive. The perfect cartridge for me!!.
