We had in for barrel threading a Mossberg MVP, just had the receiver and barrel. The receiver looked pretty good, it was smaller in diameter, about 1.25" and 223 length.
Looking online at pictures the varminter has a decent looking bolt handle (not tactical) bottom metal flush with the stock and the magazine, AR type, sticking out, perhaps a flush magazine could be crafted. Replace the ugly lock nut barrel. Triggers are available from Jard and others.

Has anyone had any experience with it? A small action at a reasonable price would be nice.
Or is it a POS and I should just forget about it?

The 223 mvp bolt has that little spring loaded lip on the bolt to help feeding I guess. If you're looking for a small action, check out the howa mini and the cz 527 too.

The Howa mini looks good, and the diameter is less than the Mossberg.
The magazine is not to my taste. Is seems manufactures marketing people think everyone is going to be attacked by something. A flush mag with five is plenty for the reality I live in. Last post in the thread you referenced hits it on the head, "That thing needs a Wiebe bottom metal."
