I am looking into building a 6mm-284(on a budget) and I am wondering which these cartridges would make a better choice. The 6mm Remington is actually a hair longer than the 284 case so I am not sure if I can use a rifle chambered for 6mm Remington???
I know where I can get a Ruger M77R (in 6mm) relatively cheap so I hope I can use it.

I've only had 30+yrs experience with a 6mm Rem. With that in mind, I wouldn't waste a rifle just to rechamber to a 284 based wildcat. Another 150fps don't mean squat for the expense involved in powder or gunsmith fees. Shoot that Ruger as it is. If it's not accurate you won't get a 6-284 on the cheap anyways. I put 6000+ rounds thru my 6mm and you'll be lucky to get a good 2000 out of the 284 based unit.
If you really want to get a 6-284 by the re-chamber route I would set the barrel back enough to insure that I got a complete new neck made with the 6-284 reamer. Don't expect the original neck/leade to be good enough, period. Just my opinions, Jay

Corey, yes it will work. As stated in other posts there are some things for you to watch out for. The idea about ensuring that you can set the barrel back far enough to allow you to cut a new neck and leade is a good one. I don't have the dimensional prints handy, but I would be willing to bet that the neck on the 6mm-284 will be tighter then the neck on the 6mm Rem. Is there some particular reason you're wedded to the 6mm-284? the 6mm Rem is a pretty good cartridge in it's own right, and the 6mm Rem Ackley Improved is even better, as long as we're talking wildcats. also, how long is the barrel? A 6mm-28 is basically a 6mm-06 in terms of case capacity, you'll need at least a 26" barrel to use that boiler room. Just a few other thoughts. - Dan

Dan has a good point. If that Ruger is the standard sporter model with a 22" barrel, the 6mm Remington already has more case capacity than you have barrel to use it. Especially considering that you would have to trim a little more barrel off to set it back for rechambering. In a 22" barrel, all you would get by rechambering to 6/.284 would be less magazine capacity, more difficult feeding, more muzzle blast, more powder used, more expensive brass, and perhaps a few fps in additional velocity.

I will probably just stick with the 6mm Rem, sounds like too much trouble to go through for 100 fps....if I do go with a 6mm-284 someday I will make sure to get the longer barrel.

My posting name is after the birthday of the 6.5x55 cartridge. I am seriously considering changing it to 1955 the DOB of the 244rem and hence the 6mm rem.
6mm rem and 90gr ballistic tips - go for it. It is a fantastic cartridge, fast, flat and user friendly.

The 6mm Rem has been my "Aha!" of the past couple of decades. You'll have to start reloading & see what amazing things happen, and then remember that you can zap p-dogs or deer, not to mention crows or other vermin. Not enough recoil to even mention, and not even in the same ballpark of filthy fouling as the 22-250 or Swift. It is one of those rounds the rag writers could do an article on as a "my sole rifle" candidate, and one I would be perfectly comfortable with.
