I've got an idea brewing about a one piece base/ring combo for the ring and bridge on an M70. Sorta like the Talley and Holland offerings but different. I'm currently working with one machine shop for production but these guys aren't "gun guys" hence I'm having a difficult time explaining what I want.
So, does anyone have any recommendations to whom I can speak to about my ideas and hopefully translate it to metal? I already have some rough drawings and dimensions available.
Why not try either one of the gunsmithing schools or a local trade school? Ask one of the teachers to recommend a student with the most talent and see if they might want to put your idea into metal for a class project.
Once you have a prototype in your hand it is a hell of allot easier to get a machine shop to duplicate it.
This was suggested to me when I was having trouble finding a machine shop to make a thread-chasing tap for square threaded Springfields.
People in these kinds of schools love a challenge, where most businesses can't afford it...or more to the point, you can't afford what they will charge you to make one custom piece.

For goodness sake, keep on thing in mind, and that is to develope a QD that when the scope is off that you have a clear receiver that allows full access to the iron sights, otherwise why have a QD system!!!

Ray, Open sights are not the only advantage to QD scope rings. Having a spare scope sighted in and ready to go with a system that returns to zero is invaluable to me if I go on a trip where I do not have access to my shop or when I do not want to fiddle with attaching a spare scope and sighting it in.

Talk to Mark Stratton, He already makes custom bases for model 70's and others. If his won't work for you, perhaps explaining your idea to him will allow your idea to come to fruition.

Mark, I have a Griffin and Howe in 404 Jeffery I need some of your bases on. Thanks for the quick turn around on the last model 70 action. Hope your book is going on well.

lb404, I just got done proofreading Mark's book. It is very well thought out and a great tool. I have seen these setups in action and highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to fiddle in metal.

The book is coming along. I send out 3 proof copies to friends with red pens and I've started to get them back. I'm anything but a writer, I can even screw up spell and grammer check. I hope to have it out in a month or so. It going to be a limited edition. I've heard stories about people in this trade writing books and having the printer print a 1000 copies. Of course 950 are still in storage. That won't be me,100 copies sounds about right.
