build a 6.5 X 55......put the .260 project off until you get a better action /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." The 6,5x55 is of course the perfect round, but there is no reason why the 260 would not work splendid. Bent Fossdal Reiso 5685 Uggdal Norway

What about the .260 in a 24/47 action?

I second that motion.......... I'd not be opting to touch off a 260 with anything but a modern bolt gun. Williams Machine Works

The 24/47 is IMO fine with the .308 family of cartridges and further IMO re heat treating is optional with this action! (I wouldn't) You may have to do a wee bit of rail work but then you did say it was a gunsmithing school project.....sounds like a great way to get started! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." What I would build in a swede action, provided that you already HAVE a 6.5x55 is either a 6mmRem or a 257Roberts And mabey just mabey a 7x57. These rounds will feed without any issues in a '96 action. Frankly I'd be hesitant to build anything in the "308family" into a 96 action, but I'll temper that by saying it matters if you are talking about a "True" 96 action, a Mauser Obendorf (affectionatly known to swede lovers as "Obie") or a Carl Gustav ("CG") OR a 1938-43 production Husqvarna which are strongly aleged to have better Metalurgy and thus strength. I'd build a sporter on a "Husky" with no hesitation. On an Obie or a CG? Nope. If I developed a real woodie for having a 260Rem I'd get a Remington 700. AD If I provoke you into thinking then I've done my good deed for the day! If the Swedes sell the 96 in 270 at 65kpsi average that would proof at 84.5 kpsi ~ 91 kpsi, then I think I can shoot the slightly smaller case head 260 at 60 kpsi. Of course, that is the kind of "chambered for this, then can be chambered for that" thinking I am always making fun of. The calculations and testing would be better. I have always wanted to shoot 50BMG with a 96 to make up for Ackley not testing it*, but the case is larger in diameter than the bolt bore. If any one has a 260 Rem that would like to race my 96 Swede over the chrono title for title, I am ready. I have a 260, and no way can it make the power that my 96 makes with the 6.5x55 and hot handloads. *I am sitting on more overload experimental data than Ackley ever published, as are some others.

If one is going to all the trouble to build a custom rifle then use the best materials available so that you can sell the gun at a premium price..The M-96 is not the action to build a good rifle on, it is akin to building a beautiful rifle and using a cheap piece of wood on it...all that work and what have you got? It breaks my heart to see a Swedish Mauser reduced to anything but what it was intented. Let that Swede action rest in peace ! I hate seeing sporterized Swedish Mausers. I passed on purchasing 5 of them this week at an auction. All sold for about $50 each. Just my two cents from a man that loves a good Swedish Mauser.

Boarman.......I didn't make myself very clear. I have just the action. I got it in a trade. Someone had already removed the barrel, (and thus the serial number,) and had already drilled scope mount holes in that nice, old Carl Gustav crest. They also installed a new Timney trigger, which is worth more than what I have in the action itself. By the way, I would buy all the bubbaed Swedes I could find, if they were going for 50 bucks apiece. Up here in Minnesota, home-sporterized Swedes are going for at least 200 bucks each, at auction.... Anyway, as I stated in my original post; this will be a donor action for my 23 year-old who is going to attend gunsmith school. The college said he should bring an action as a basis for building a rifle during the course. Just had a brainstorm! We have a 54 Winchester in 30 WCF, that we love to shoot, and hunt with. Maybe as a challenge to the budding gunsmith, (and his teachers,) he should attempt to make that Swede feed rimmed cartridges... I can see it now........A sweet little Husky sporter in 30-30.......
