Went to a gunshow this last weekend and couldn't resist bringing this mauser home. I'm not really a maple kind of guy and prefer classic lines, but I think the wood has some geat looking grain. What really got my attention was the action. It's an FN made in 1948 with a complete C ring. It presently has a aftermarket 30/06 barrel, but depending on how it shoots, may be converted to 9.3 x 62 or possibly 9.3 x 64.

congretulations! If the price was right you bought yourself a very nice rifle. The commercial FN 98 action on this rifle is excellent and certainly not second to the best German produced actions like the Oberndorf. Why change the 30/06 barrel if it shoots well, my FN 98 based Mauser in 30/06 shoots 0.7 MOA with 200 gr. Partitions and those are potent enough to kill any game smaller than big sized game.

I agree she is a super find. Very nice even curl on that stock. Nice color too.

Thanks for the complements. I got it for $400. Thats a little more than I would have wanted to pay for this gun just for the action, but the rest of the rifle looks good. He was going to give me $100 off if I just took the barreled action, but decided to take the whole thing. Whether or not it stays together ,depends on how it shoots. It is not bedded, but am going to try it out the way it is first. The receiver has some weaver type mounts installed, but the only thing is that the front hole spacing is the same as the rear, where as the front hole spacing is usually wider.

Iv'e got a couple of these actions. Iv'e also got one made in 48 with a thumb cut? These are some of the best mauser type actions that one could find. My current custom rifle is being made on one of these actions for a 25.06 by Winston Elrod with barrel work by Nick Hughes. I'll get it ,I hope, at the Oct. Tulsa gun show. The other action I think I'm going to sell.

Well I'd say you stole it for that price, an excellent action, and not a bad looking stock. Browningguy Houston, TX We Band of 45-70ers

You could reshape it with a rasp to classic-style if you wish but I think it looks pretty good the way it is. Beautiful fiddleback. And commercial FNs are the nicest of all 98 Mausers IMO. NRA Life Member, Band of Bubbas Charter Member, PGCA, DRSS. Shoot & hunt with vintage classics.

One Word...SSSSSwwweeeet! Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

How do you guy think it would look if the stock was darkened to something like this.

Excellent find any way you end up going with it. I'd vote for a 9,3x62. And the reddish color would look just as good on the 98 as is does on the Flintlock...............DJ ....Remember that this is all supposed to be for fun!..................

This stock was yellow when I got it. Nothing like acid stain and a little heat: NRA Life Member, Band of Bubbas Charter Member, PGCA, DRSS. Shoot & hunt with vintage classics.

Hart, Aqua Fortis (AF) and heat does inpart beautiful depth and color as on Fla3006's gun. However, I must admit I cheated on the Flintlock. Depending on the wood AF can yield a mellow brown to a nice dark brown or a reddish color as well. If you do not get a redish color some red stain may be used to get it. In may case I used Laurel Mountain Forge alcohol based stains. First coat was Lancaster Maple (brown) rubbed back with 0000 steel wool. 2nd and 3rd coats were with Maple stain (reddish) wiped on lightly with a cottom cloth.

Beautiful color on the ruger and flintlock. What is Aqua Fortis? When you say heat do you mean with a flame?

Aqua Fortis is an acid based stain also referred to as Nitrate of Iron. If I remember correctly it is mainly nitric acid with disolved iron. You can buy it commercially through several muzzleling supply houses such as www.logcabinshop.com or www.trackofthewolf.com or www.muzzleloaderbuilderssupply.com It will come with instructions but essentially ... You wipe or paint it on the stock and let dry. You will not see any color change at this point. You apply heat by either open flame or by using a heat gun to blush the wood and bring the color out. The heat gun will likely be easier and be less likely to char parts of the stock. A hair dryer will not give off sufficient heat. If you get a greenish color you need to apply more heat to get to the browns or redish brown depending on the wood. After you have finsihed heating the stock you need to neutralize the stain with a lye wash (which can be made from wood ashes and water) or baking soda wash and then wash off the stock. If you do not neutralize the stain it will turn black over time. As mentioned earlier you can apply a stain over the top of AF to give it more of a reddish color. You can also get some finishes that have a reddish pigment added and achieve the same results. The one I am thingking of is Pilkingtons and is available from www.brownells.com You control the color by the number of applications. A clear finish should not change the color to any great degree just make it slightly more vivid. Naturraly you would have to strip the finish off the stock first. OR You should be able to simply strip the finish off the stock and apply some LMF Maple stain over the top of the stain already on the gun and acheive a very nice color. You can even thin the LMF stain 50% with alcohol and gradually build up to your desired color. The color it is when wet will be very very nearly the color when the finish is applied.
