need to replace a trigger return spring and throughly clean...not the DAO Model, this model

The info in the manual makes no sense

It states after removing the bolt retaining pin, place a paper clip between the bolt and the barrel breach face.

Then turn the gun upside down and insert a brass rod in the magazine well and drive the bolt off the slide.

But you can see from the pic that bolt can't go out the top because it is retained by the top of the slide and it can't go froward because it also retained by the notches in the top of the slide.

2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.

4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.

I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.

Did you actually try to tap the bolt from the bottom up like the instructions said to do? From what I can see in the picture, the bolt looks like it can slide right up out the top. The sides of the bolt are narrower than both ends so I think you'll find the bolt will come straight up, if you hit it in that direction. Don't forget the paper clip!

You just really got to wonder about any firearm that has the words "place a paperclip" in it's disassemble instructions.

Actually, I think it's quite practical. If the instructions had said, "Insert a .05 inch spacer between the bolt and the barrel breechface..." what would you think? It's a readily available item and if you don't actually have a paperclip on hand, you have enough familiarity with them to figure out what you need, i.e. folded matchbook cover, etc.

You need to quit playing with such toys and get a real pistol! Wink

Just kidding. Even the vaunted Kimber requires a precisely bent paper clip to disassemble. I'd hate to be in combat and search search for that bastard though.

Hey an AMT DAO 380 served me well for about 7 years as a back-up gun

Good thing you live in a low crime neighborhood. Big Grin You sure you didn't carry the AMT DAO 380 for a throw down? 'Cause it would make more sense.

Mike, thank God you never actually had to employ it. ALL handguns manufactured by AMT are marginal and certainly not suitable for defensive purposes.

For some reason the words "burr" and "saddle" come to mind. I'm sure there's some past experience behind this statement, but employing the words "all" or "none", like "you always" and "you never" when arguing with your spouse, are rarely accurate reflections of the truth.

I didn't think you California cops were allowed to actually fire your weapons for fear of hitting something.

Jon, perhaps you're right; I haven't seen every firearm manufactured by AMT. Howerver, I have seen many and of course I saw them because their owners wanted them fixed. When I started my business I attempted to repair a couple and found those particular guns so poorly manufactured, of such low quality material that I concluded AMT were very poor quality firearms, not ones I'd care to trust. So, IMO, ALL AMT products are junk. Certainly a sweeping generalization. If you own one you like, good for you.

Hi John -

Personal experience is one of our most influential guides. Knowing your experience with AMT's helps put your assessment in context. I've not owned an AMT ever, but in determining whether I might, knowing that you speak from experience is a help. Some will bash a manufacturer without any personal experience, which is no help at all.

Thanks.

John,
Just curious, what was the most common problem or repair on the Backup that you saw (like the one Mike pictured)?
I have 2 AMTs, one like Mike's (380) and another in 45 ACP DOA.
Never had a problem, not even a stove-pipe.
