Hopefully this hasn't been asked too much before. I've searched and can't find the info I need.
I'm going to re-stock my Savage 10. This will be an all-around big game rifle. Serious hunting applications, such as those encountered on expensive hunts in Canada and Alaska, are a possibility.
Would it be prudent to go with a laminated stock? Would Walnut stand up to the conditions in these places? Another concern is weight. I don't want a heavy rifle. Is laminate a lot heavier than walnut?
Thank you in advance for your replies.

A laminate is somewhat denser than plain walnut. A lot depends on the thickness of the plies, and how much glue is used. Either will hold up ok if it is finished well (soaked in marine epoxy). The laminates will generally be more stable in damp conditions (the warping tendencies of the layers tend to cancel each other out). Regardless of your final choice, you will need to be scrupulous aboput sealing the barrel channel and the butt under the recoil pad. A Savage rifle and a laminate stock go together like Bill Clinton and blowjobs, John Kerry and lies, or GW Bush and a deep and abiding love for the citizens of this country. JCN

Everything JohnCharlie said. Try Boyds for a Laminate. They will reduce the weight on the stock by about 10oz by removing wood that is not needed. I would go laminate. You could buy another gun or 3 for the price of a nice walnut blank counting you do the work.

Shouldn't that read rich citizens of this country. Or maybe more precisely, rich citizens involved in the oil industry.
He certainly doesn't seem to love us working stiffs in manufacturing.
I must admit that Kerry is no prize and is definatly "honesty chalenged" but please, don't try to equate GW Bush with anything but Halibuton's (can you say Dick Cheny) puppet.

Go laminate, more stable but not as pretty as a nice walnut blank,,,but then guns are for shooting not looking at. All my new gun stocks/guns are laminate. Nicer to look at and better balanced than synthetic. I like the dark gray or dark green laminates
GW did get me a nice $600 little critter check,,,,and I refinanced at 4.25 % on a 20 year morgage,,,,,pretty nice for this working stiff

I just had a stock made by Serengeti and am really pleased with it. Rod, Larry, and KC are great to work with. I had a few modifications to an existing pattern they had that I requested and Serengeti handled those perfectly. I'm extremely pleased with the product and service.

You might want to try accurateinnovations.com They make laminated and full walnut stocks which have aluminum bedding blocks and a metal shaft through the wrist. Looks like a good combination. Been thinking about trying one myself.

I appreciate the offer, and it appears that they make very fine stocks. They are, however, above my price range at this time.
I was looking at Accurate Innovations. I like the idea of their full-length bedding block. As they say, though, no two actions are the same. If the block doesn't match perfectly with your particular action, aren't you SOL as far as bedding goes?

Check www.24hourcampfire.com in their "Gear shop" they sell the Accurate Innovations stocks for for $50-$60 less than the factory list price. I'm going to use for my left handed MRC action because I can get it in lefty for the same price.

I suuuuuure do like that little video snippet that you post with your user name.
Is that your missus?
There is an article in the Nov. issue of "Rifle" on the Serrenghetti (did I spell that right ) laminmated stocks. Sure looks like the best of both worlds to me.
